I want me some Crappie!!!
« on: May 11, 2010, 01:07:16 PM »
well we went out to Downs after hearing all about the awesome crappie fishing with people hauling in the big crappies...well three of us went out in my buddies boat and it was our first time on this lake so we headed out and tried the padline in front of the launch but didnt ever get a single crappie all afternoon ....fished from about 3 until dark....we did catch a few trout, not that we wanted to, and caught about 35-40 perch, most of them around 8.5 inches but ended up keeping 12 in the 9-12 inch range...all fish were caught on either red/chartruse crappie tubes or on yellow ones....had 3 largemouth follow our spinners (WHITE) had one bad hookset on one and faught him for about 3 seconds and he came off. saw one guy land one largemouth fishing a black jig in the pads. ....does anyone know where to go for crappie here?...they said right in front of the launch but that didnt work for us...we went to the left and eventually on the opposite side of the lake to the left.... anyway, still a good day and got some tasty perch....if the pic shows up, the bottom fish is almost 10 inches for reference...

fishing too deep thats why all you got were perch try and shallow it up a bit !! get your lures what ever they may be off the bottom and you should pick up some crappies !!  ;)

hhmmm so you think we were too deep...?   it didn't feel that deep, only about 8 feet....maybe we should have gone to four feet...the one thing I wish I would have done was fish with a slip bobber and tried shallower in the water column...but yeah the perch fishing was great and i cant complain about catching a few 12 inch perch...what is their spawning pattern, dont the males make the nests shallow and the females cruise ....or something...

how do you target crappie? do you just rig one of them crappie jigs on a bobber setup to control depth? I've never quite understood it. it seems like small bass fishing.

Yeah, i didn't have my bobbers with me on that trip...which was dumb... and I also didn't have any little beetle spins which I really like for casting and finding fish...but i did have some roadrunners that I threw out looking for perch...I used a pretty slow retrieve...now i am thinking I should have sped it up a bit...but who knows... :dunno:
