The second shot was taken in a small tarn pond in an alpine environment. I believe that to get the huge sword like crystals (upwards of 3 feet long) the water had to be absolutely 100% calm and super pure. The ice was also incredably thin. It was the only time I have ever seen it. I am a fan of filling the frame with pics like that. Here is a shot of the pond in context.
