Nushagak River
« on: June 16, 2010, 09:37:00 PM »
Just curious if anybody has fished the Nushagak so i know what to expect. I'll be there July 10Th thru Th 18Th above the fish counter by about 40 miles. I was wondering what species of fish? I know there will be a fair amount of Chinook, but was wondering about the rainbows or other fish i could target for a day or two while I'm there.

there is a review on steelhead university.com from a guy that went on a guided camping trip there and caught like 105 chinooks in 3 days.

Is the taste of the bait worth the sting of the hook twice?

You will have a great trip it has great fishing. There is another river by there called wood river that is famous for big rainbow. The kings get there now followed by a sockeye run in the middle of july.

Going with a friend who knows somebody that has a camp on the river. It's a unguided trip except that my buddy has been before. there will be 7 of us in camp and the last group, i think there will be 3 boats available, so we will be able to get a ways up and down the river. We will be going after the Kings mostly, but we will be there for 8 days so it would be nice to spend a day fishing for something else. Thanks Buckhorn2 I'll look for the Wood river on the map and see if it's do-able from where we are at.

I have done the Alagnak river over there 5 times,  a 65 mile float everytime with just buddies, camp and fish all the way down for a week,  one year we got 9 species of fish,  we went the perfect time that year,  But over there,  there is some big leapard bows.  Awsome.
When you go, little to early for flesh patterns so the egg toothpic method will do good.
Your flyfishing right?

I'm bringing 3 rods for Kings (2 spinning and 1 casting) and my buddy is bringing the fly rods, so we should be covered. I seen that flesh pattern fly somewhere does it really work?

As soon as the salmon start to decay in the river,  its the most amazing fly ever.  Specially if you put a dropper egg pattern below it.
I dead drift that set up under and indicator.
I cant wait to see your pics of your trip.  Ill try and round some of mine up for you.
