Close-up trail cam pics
« on: April 02, 2008, 08:42:34 PM »
In looking through some of our 2007 trail cam pis, I found several where the elk got close-up and personal with the cam.  They seem to be very curious about it.  I have several where they actually licked or fogged up the lens and the next couple pics look cloudy.

Nice pics I don't mean to steal the thread but do many people use trail cams as their scouting procedure? Is this something I should be looking into?

it is a very useful tool if it's an area you are seriously planning on hunting, and if you are planning on using a treestand in a particular area.

what is that redish block on the ground?!  :chuckle: A "natural" salt within the dirt?! lol  :chuckle:

Its not my salt block, but it seemed like a good place for the camera  :P. There were several salt blocks in the area. There were also several head of cattle roaming around too....we figured the salt was left by a rancher.  Funny thing is that we have about 200 pics from this camera and not one pic of the elk actually liking the salt block.  They all seem to check it out though! I think they might be more drawn to the area which is dark, cool, and easy to travel through...thanks to the cattle.  This was an area we scouted but didnt really hunt, due to another group of hunters being in the same drainage.

The trail cam has turned out to be a ton of fun.  It has been used for seeing what critters might be in an area, not so much for setting up a treestand or blind.  We had this cam set up for about 3 weeks and found mostly cows and raghorns, no big bulls.  So we concentrated on another area.
