45-70 BFR

I've been saying for a while now that I should make a video of my 45-70 BFR being shot, and I finally got around to doing it. Nobody else ever shoots the full power loads out of this gun, so I didn't know how much the gun actually moved. Now that I've seen it I'm starting to understand why I've been asked not to shoot it at the public range.

As I say in the video, the 300gr load is moving at just over 1800fps and the 440gr load is a little over 1600fps. I'm shooting at a 10" armour plate gong. The 45-70 actually leaves a deeper impression in the gong than some of the rifles do. It's pretty funny to watch the gong get hit. And it rings like it's been hit by a train.

cool video. I do not have a 45-70 pistol yet, but I do have a contender with a 10" .444 Marlin barrel. It was originally a .44 mag barrel that had been reamed out. The thing doesn't have a compensator on it and the recoil is brutal. Funnest thing in the world to shoot.

So are you going to hunt with it?

I've had a few Contender barrels in 45-70. One with the compensator and two without. The comp really doesn't do much on this caliber. There just isn't enough pressure at the muzzle to make the the comp effective. I switched to the BFR a few years ago because I couldn't safely get the performance I wanted out of a Contender.

With lighter loads the gun is a *censored* cat to shoot. These are just the full bore hunting loads. I've carried the gun hunting for a few years, but I haven't had a chance to shoot anything other than a few rabbits with it. I'm hoping that I can change that this year. I want to try and finally get a deer with this gun. I think that I found a good spot to set up a tree stand that will give me a few good shooting lanes out to 75 yards. That's about my limit with the iron sights.

you wouldn't by chance be looking to unload one of your contender barrels? I have a first Generation frame.

I actually sold or traded off most of my Contender barrels. I just got sick of the inconsistant accuracy that the Contender would give. One day I'd get tiny groups then the next day, shooting the same batch of handloads, the group size would double. Now I'm down to just a 14" 35 Rem and a 10" 7mm TCU.

I do,I loaded up some RCBS 507 Gr cast bullets that I had in the reloading room. Loaded them with IMR4198   43.0 gr
