Coyote scope
« on: June 21, 2010, 08:46:25 PM »
This year I'll be hunting yotes with my AR-15. My question is what do you all use /recommend for optics? Do I go with a red dot, high magnification (up to 10 or 12x) or minimal power scope(3-9ish; maybe fixed at 3x or 4x)? My hunting will be here on the wet side for the most part, with the exception of a weekend trip to the potholes. I'm not particularly looking for brand or model recommendations as much as I am a general direction of what type i should be looking at.

Thoughts?

i myself like higher powered scopes because i carry a shotgun so i can bust them to 60+ yards so i like a 4.5-14 or better myself you will find with the dots and scopes like that. that the dot covers up the whole yote and ranges of 150+ and makes them harder to shoot i had a red dot on a ar-15 and took it off for that reason depends on the the size of dot but i would use a good scope.

On the west side. A 3-9 is all you need.

all i use is a 3x9 how often are you gonna make a 300+ yard shot with you AR, you can see a coyote just fine at 300 with a 3x9, but thats just me, i like to shoot them with a shotgun if you can anyways  :P

I use a 4.5x14 wit a BDC you may not need all that a 3x9 may be ok for you. The question I have is would you rather be over prepared or under prepared. I rarely shoot over 300 yard but twice I have shot coyotes at 400-450 yards and it was nice to be able to see them well. If your looking for quality scopes the price difference will be minimal. I would get the higher power.  :twocents:

4.5-14 is what I like the most. It lets you shot close in the brush and you can still see well for those 3-400 yard pokes. I have a 3-9x50 on my AR right now but im saving for a 4.5-14x44 because the 9x just isnt enough for me when I want to take longer shots at a little yote. My .338 win has a 4.5-14 and i realy like the extra power to see a little better, coyotes are pretty small and you realy need to be on the ball when shooting 3-400+yards.

Demon, why not swap scopes on your rifles?

I'm a little shocked there aren't more red dot users. I'm partial to the 3-9 as thats what i've always hunted/shot with so i'm comfortable with it. Good info though thanks guys.

Cause I like shooting long range with the .338 and it gives me a reason to buy another gun to put the 3-9 on :chuckle:

I have a 4 to 12 swift on my 17 remington, but I think a 3 to 9 is more than fine.  Larry
