Homebrew for 2 weeks
« on: June 26, 2010, 08:55:11 AM »
I finally was able to get up to my property to get my pictures and refill my corn.  A bear had ripped down my feeder but didn't hurt it.  It was pretty cool to get whitetails, muleys, elk, and bear all on my own property!  Hopefully I'll get a crack at something this fall with my bow.  My daughter knocked the batteries out of the external flash, and I didn't catch it when I hung the camera, so the night pictures weren't any good; they'll have to come next time.  Enjoy:

Yeah, it'll be cool to see what he turns out like. I think the doe in the last pic has put on some fake eyelashes, she's purdy....

How far up that tree does that bear stand? I'm a terrible judge of bears. Seems like he's got a long snout.

Nice pics!  Do you have a close-up of your feeder or could you tell me how you built it?

Thanks

The feeder is all PVC.  Bottom is 3" street 45 I had laying around.  Middle is 3" pipe for about 4'.  Top is 4" for 2.5'.  That's just what I happened to have laying around from building my house.  It holds 10 pounds of corn, so my next one would be all out of 4" to get 15# or so in it; I just didn't have enough 4" around.  The top rain cover is a 4" rubber test cap that I had from doing the water tests for the county on the plumbing drains in the house.

I think it's a small to medium bear.  I'd guess him at 200#.  He stands about 6.5' on the tree to the top of his head, so he's a 5.5' bear....roughly.  That's just an educated guess, though.

Thanks for the info.  Is it just open on the bottom or is there another opening for the animals to get to the corn?

It's open on the bottom.  About 2-3 cups of corn fall out before it piles up enough to stop falling out.  I've just got to figure out how to get the bears from tearing it off the tree.......

Very nice nice pics and awesome property.  Have you tried any color correction, the white balance seems off a bit.

With a homebrew infrared flash you have to remove the IR filter or scrape the coating off the lens of the digital camera.  This leads to a pink hue on any daytime pictures but allows the lens to see the IR flash at night.  Thinking about switching it to black and white to get rid of that.

Anybody have an opinion on which is worse, the pinkish hue or black and white?

I'd hold out for the mulie.  The whitetail is a better but the weird horn mulie is cooler.

If you put something in the picture that is white, you can then use a "Choose Neutral Color" tool in something like Picasa and that should correct for the coating.
