Coyotes #2 & #3!!!
« on: July 12, 2010, 10:14:21 AM »
 :IBCOOL:

Well really number 3 shown here is now only #2 since I missed the 1st number 2 so I guess maybe I can count my total as 2 & half now? (that totally didnt make sense!)

I set up in a little clearing at this 40acre farm in Granite Falls where I am providing coyote control for my farmer 'customer'. I got set up about 0530 and within 10 minutes and one set of pup distress on the PowerDogg I had one come in from the right side and bee-line for Thumper - my little rabbit decoy. Since it was so early into the stand I was not expecting to see one yet and not from that area and I didnt have my shotgun in my hand (its only a home defense with 18" open barrel) and it was laying on the ground next to me. But the 1st one came from the right and about 20-25yds out and went straight for the decoy and was not stopping - I lip squeaked to try & stop it but it ignored me ( I shoulda barked?) and went right to the decoy and sniffed it and turn to run away slowly so I took at shot at once it turned around and missed it. I think I must have shot over it since it was so close but it was a quick aim at a moving target so I dont know - but I am still bummed about it.  :'(

After my shot I ky-yi'd for a minute and stayed put - I was setup against a stump with a fallen branch and leaves as cover. But within 5 min another one came in from the trees where I was expecting - I couldnt believe another one came in so soon after my 1st shot.  :o I almost thought it was the same one! But she was totally eyeing ol Thumper too and I didnt want her to get in any closer so I took a shot at her once she stopped at the treeline about 60-70yds out and hit her right behind the front right shoulder (where predator pro tells me to aim!) and the .223 55gr Hornady V-Max dropped her in her tracks! She spun around and hit the ground and flopped there for a minute so I hit her again in the back of the neck to put her out - and make sure she didnt get up and run on me like the last one!

So one more chicken/turkey robbing yote down and one scared $h!tless that hopefully (for the farmers sake) wont come back!

Below are pics of 'yote, Thumper my trusty partner, and the area I was setup at.

Here's pics of Thumper and looking out at from my stand (you can barely see thumper just below the leaves out in the clearing) then back towards it from Thumper's position. Man that decoy was one of the best things I bought!

hey I got the same hat!

Congrats man. And, congrats on finding a decent place to hunt yotes on the wetside. ;)

I got that thumper decoy too...havent had much luck with it yet, but I rarely set it up. I guess I have to use it to get success with it.  ;)

Keep at it, I am sure the farmer loves it.

Thanks man! I tell ya, every time I have had a dog come in with that decoy out (3 times now) they have TOTALLY been dead zoned in on it and nothing else - I mean like mezmerized by it!

(and Les Johnson is a punk - I'll smoke that slouch anyday!)  :liar: heheheh But he never did answer my email!

BTW - Another guy called me about getting the 'yotes outta his place nearby me here in Duvall so now I got 3 new places to hunt at. You should come over here sometime and check out my new Axiom. But its not like over there where you have 10 billion acres of open land to hunt on....

Nice job on the dogs. I'd be happy to hook up sometime if you want a helper. Just live up here in Lake Stevens. Good to go most Sat evenings and Sundays. I can back up with shotgun or rifle. Let me know sometime, I'd love to tag along.

Keep bust'n those poodles!

You have to catch Les on a good day when he hasn't been hitting the sauce, to get him to admit to not being the greatest ever.

 :chuckle: Thats good  :chuckle:

Check out this picture I saw on the Cabela's forum - isnt that Les Johnson? I cant figure out if the guy who posted it - 'vizlas/Adam' is passing it off as himself or simply using it as proof that the axiom works. Is that not Les?

Cleck here to see it: http://forums.cabelas.com/showthread.php?t=7911

Yeah that'd be cool. I know a guy with 20acres in Machias that I can hunt on and he says he sees/hears them there all the time. Only rule is there is one with a really dark coat, almost black he says, and he wants it for the hide if I get it. So no shotgun slugs or .270wsm like Jayrod!  :chuckle: I havent hunted out there yet but I'm gonna head out there in the next week or two, probably one evening after work 1st to howl/scout it a bit then hunt it at 1st light on a sat/sun. But first I wanna hit the Granite Falls farm again for the lady farmer out there. Then the Duvall guy's son wants to help me when I hunt for the dogs at their place when they get back in town after 7/20. I mean what am I gonna say, its their property! They only have 7 acres with houses around so I said 'sure you can help, I'll try & call them in and YOU can take the shot!' He's all pumped about that.  :chuckle:

The .270 is great for hide.......It peels it right off the animal.  ;)
"One does not hunt in order to kill; on the contrary, one kills in order to have hunted..If one were to present the sportsman with the death of the animal as a gift he would refuse it. What he is after is having to win it, to conquer the surly brute through his own effort and skill with all the extras that this carries with it: the immersion in the countryside, the healthfulness of the exercise, the distraction from his job." Oh man, I love that little wabbit! I'm serious, they cant take their eyes off the damn thing. Last one I got out there came in and saw me and took off. But she stopped about 75yds and was peering thru the bushes back at the decoy and just could not leave. She came sneaking back in even though I was sitting right there - ol Thumper was just too tempting for her!  :chuckle:
