The Axiom draws first blood!
« on: July 19, 2010, 01:59:41 PM »
I AM A NON-STOP COYOTE KILLING HARBINGER OF DEATH!! HAHAHAHA OK, I know thats a little overboard and cocky since this is only my 3rd yote ever - but I was all pumped and feeling like I was on a roll! But I got my 1st kill with the Axiom this last Sunday.  I was back out at the Granite Falls farm again.

I went out at first light and about 15min into my 1st stand I had this female come in from my left. Called her in with the PowerDogg on jackrabbit distress and once again she came in from where I wasnt expecting. She came up a driveway clearing on my left and was eyeing lil Thumper the rabbit decoy. But since she came from the side I had no cover and was totally exposed so she saw me and I couldnt swing the rifle around to her. She was scanning the area and looked right at me and I just stayed totally still without moving but she saw me after a few seconds and ran back the way she came. But she got out about 75yds away behind the bushes and a stump and just stared back at Thumper. Curiosity got the best of her and she started slinking back in thru the tall grass and came out in the clear about 50-55 yds and stood there. I re-positioned the rifle when she first ran off so I was scoped in on her and watching her come in the whole time. When she stopped I hit her in the chest with the Axiom and a 55gr V-Shok with Nosler Ballistic Tip and she dropped like a freakin sack of potatoes!

It was the only one I got to come in that day but at least I got one with the Axiom its first time out. I hit her right where I aimed and it looked like the bullet came out on her left shoulder and damn near blew her left leg right off! Looked like she had pups recently but she wasnt too raw around the teets so maybe they just weaned recently? I looked around in the woods where she came from thinking maybe I'd see/hear the pups but no luck.

Anyway, not the greatest pics but chalk up another bird thief for the farmer!

Nicely done! I need to get the .223 out that I built and do the same.
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.

Thanks guys - heading out there again this weekend to get another one and also hunting a new spot in Machias. There is still a boatload around there - sounds like there is still at least 8-10 or more howling in the evening. Gonna take my 9yo out there and let him try & get his 1st one. But he doesnt want to shoot my MP15 or the Axiom, he wants to pop one with his 10/22. I hear guys telling me that will do it inside 75yds - and 60yds is about the longest shot he'll have out there - but I just cant see that little 36gr "ladyfinger" shell taking one down???  :dunno: I'll let you know how it goes!

While I have killed 'yotes with a .22rf, I would recommend something larger if the range is much past 40 yards or so....the little thing just doesn't have much penetration power...
Of sorrow and sickness I've known on my way,
But I'm old and I'm nervis,
I'm cast from the Service,
And all I deserve is a shillin' a day.

I would backtrack the way she came in and try to find the pups.  She looks dry, but her pups are going to be between 14-16 weeks.  Unless they have another adult feeding them, they will probably be hungry and come to a call really easy.
Dreams are forever on the mind, realization in the hands.
