Hi folks
In the market for a new gps for hunting! looking over selection in cab. catalog.Tons of new gizmos, lots of choices?Looking med. range but want to spend money wisely.

Do a "Bing" Search and compare prices.

REI has some good prices once in a while or look at Garmin for some refurbished units 

A buddy of mine droped and broke the screen on his, and bought a refurbished 60csx for about $115 or so.

I have the 60CSx and am more than happy with it. I have the 100k disk loaded, as well as a free 24k (from GPSFileDepot) that I sometimes use.

Also consider looking at the Garmin Rino Series.  My old man and I both have the Rino 530's and there great!!  When were talking with each other i can look to see where he is, or i can poll his location so i know where he is and i can stay quiet.  I absolutely love the Rino series and don't know how we hunted with out them.

I just upgraded my gps again.  After a lot of research, I decided on the Garmin Oregon 450T.  The mapping is unreal with the 1:24K.  I strictly chose this unit over the Rino 530 because of it's larger view screen and 3D mapping capabilities that the Rino didn't have.  I primarily hunt solo.  If I'm going with a buddy, I will just throw in my older Rino for the tracking ability and use of the radio features.  You can't go wrong with either and for hunting purposes Garmin's imo are hands down the best.  Fishing is a different story.  Cabelas actually had the 450T's on sale for $369, which was cheaper than I could find anywhere else.  The 550T adds a small megapixel camera if you desire to have a cheap camera built in.

I just use a Garmin Geko.  It is small, light, inexpensive, easy to use, marks places that I want to mark, and could help get me out of the woods if I ever needed it to.  What more could you ask for?  I don't think I could ever justify dropping $400 plus on a gps, no more than I use mine.  As far as the map features go...if I want to see whats over the next hill, well I walk there and look.

They are nice with the map feature if you are in the woods very far and want to know which hill to walk to so that you can hit a road. especially if you have hit an animal that has traveled in a direction that you were not planning on.

True, but a $5 map will do the same, so for a basic GPS and map you're only at around $110 versus $400-$500.  I guess the Geko works for me because I really don't rely on it to get me around in the woods.  If I'm going deep in to a new area that I'm not familiar with I'll mark the truck, turn it off, and toss it in my pack.  99% of the time that's the only time I see/use it, unless I find a spot while out hunting that has some importance and is worth marking.

That map is inconvenient especially when it is raining out. The gps is just a quick look at without doing a lot of studying. Just my opinion.

This must be why they make different models, to suit different tastes. To me $300 to have a better quality of time while I am out is well worth it since I use it a lot of times.
