Western Washington Cottontail hunting w/.22lr, Any tips?

Come Sept, my son and I would like to try our hand at rabbit hunting in Western Washington.  We plan on using a .22lr that's dead nuts accurate to 100 yards.  Problem is, we know nothing about rabbit hunting.  We have a few around here but, not the numbers I think I'd need for a successful hunt.  That mixed with the terrain makes me thing it's not a good idea.  Any tips or advice?

I never hunt rabbitsuntil after the first HARD frost. September is a bit early. Becareful that you don't run into tularaemia, or coxcilious(sp), the hard frost is what takes care of the rabbits that have it..

we have very few as well and i leave them alone most the time because there is so many dam preditors after them anyways. i remeber as a kid we use to have tons and tons of jack rabbits and it was a blast to go out and hunt them. but they are all gone now we always did best in the fall. i think hunterman is spot on i would wait tell a little later and look more in the desert counrty.

Good advice on waiting.  We will do that.  No areas to look other than the desert areas and hunterman's garden?  My wife is really getting into gourmet cooking and , I'd like to get a few bunnies for her to cook with.

Yep walk old roads at dusk and dawn.  I walk really fast (almost a jog) when Im hunting rabbits.  I dont know if I just cover more ground so I see more that way or they get confused by the noise and they panic but I see a lot that way.  I noticed I saw a lot of rabbits when I didnt have my flashlight and was in a hurry to get into or out of the woods.

I second the old road idea.  My son used to walk about in the evening with his 20 gauge break open and nail them.  (We have an old logging road that runs through the place).

Edge of the wood line, where the woods and grass areas meet is also a great spot.  They come out to eat the grass, but like to be close enough to duck back into the woods if needed.
