I got a big buck i killed years back and couldn't afford a mount. I've never had one mounted so i know nothing about it. Do most taxidermist have extra  hides you can buy and have a mount done with your horns??

yes they all should be able to get you a cape or have some already that work. also if you shot a buck this year and it was the same size and not a buck you wanted to mount. you could use the cape off of it.

Yes....I messed my cape up.    Bought a cape from a buddy (he was going to sell it to a taxi).  Took my head and the cape in.  The taxi asked me would I be willing to use one of his "reserve" capes.  He said that I wouldn't have to wait for it for it to come back from the tannery.  He could start sooner.  Told him heck yeah.

Seems he had about 4-6 reserve capes that he liked to rotate out to them keep fresh.  We went into the back room and looked and found one almost identical (similar color and shading) to my buck.  The mount turned out great.

Yes all taxis have extra capes or can get them for you.
