cat question in elk area
« on: August 07, 2010, 11:29:01 PM »
i have been hunting the same area for 7 or so years. while checking my trail cam the last two times i herd a cat screaming in the timber. now  i got him on film and two weeks with no elk or deer.  :yike:if the cat moves in to the timber that the elk normally bed in will the elk move or just work around it? it is about a 1000 acres or more of big timber and just above a meadow that they go to at night. any info helps, and i hope to bag and tag him anyways labor day weekend. does predator calling work and what kind of calling? can you bait cats?  you guys are always helpfull, THANKS.  :dunno:
hunt for the the challange of the hunt and the meat,  and it's always a trophey....poachers suck.

yes calling can work. they can be called with about any predator call. my fave is fawn distress, also kid goat and just elk calls can work. a lot of times the animals will just be moved around by the cats but they will follow them. we had no cats on our place until about 3 years ago. now we have them and the deer numbers we have, have dropped by about 60% :bdid: i hate cats and i hate wolves kill that sob when you get a chance and a season open to do so!

I doubt that the elk will just hang around with a cat in the area.   :dunno:  I have seen elk migrate pretty far off just from being chased one time by a hunter.

Here are a couple of links on cougar calling.
