Barrel swap question #2
« on: August 03, 2010, 08:58:24 AM »
I have a Stevens 200 chambered in .308.  I am wanting to put a .243 barrel on it.  I can only find Savage barrels which I know are compatable.  What I want to know is, which one of these would I have to buy?

I'm assuming #1 is out because it's old style.

#2 is the one i want based on cost.

#3 is the one I think I have to get because it's the savage 10 model instead of the 110.  The 10 is the short action and the 110 is the long action.  Does this matter with barrel selection or only for the action?

Thanks

I'm guessing the number 3 barrel as it looks to be the most widely compatible for a Savage short action but for the cost of a used barrel and appropriate headspace guages you could just about buy a Savage XP in .243 NEW! I think they were only about $200 at walmart. I could see the cost of changing the barrel being acceptable if you were looking to put a Shilen match grade on your action but not a used barrel.
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.

And the headpsace guages, barrel vice and barrel wrench?

Last I knew a barrel vise was mandatory for a Savage barrel swap but w/e, I honestly don't think I would screw around to save $100 when I could have a new gun so cheaply.

This is the exact proceedure my dad uses on his:

barrel swap 2

This thread was not about should I buy another gun or not.  I've already made that thread.  I wanted to know which of the above barrels would fit my Stevens 200

Neat, I hadn't seen anyone change out a Savage barrel like that before. I still say barrel #3.

Hey, I know the guy in that video! :chuckle: That's me! I'm glad to see that somebody is actually watching that. I haven't tried removing a factory barrel using the port entry action wrench, but it will probably work alright. I use the full action wrench to break the factory barrel loose just because it gives more leverage. And some of the factory barrels need a little extra leverage. ;)

As far as the barrels go, #1 is out because it probably uses the pre 1967 recessed breech barrel where the bolt head fits inside a recess in the barrel (like a Remington). The other 2 should work fine though. $70 is awfully high for a used factory take off. I rarely pay more than $55 shipped for a factory barrel unless in it's in a highly desirably caliber (308, 7mm-08). Even then, I paid $65 shipped for a 7mm-08 barrel a few weeks ago. And I paid $45 shipped for my Stevens take off barrel in 243 a few months ago. Shop around and you will find a better price. Check out http://savageshooters.com/SavageForum if you haven't already. You do need to be a paid member ($12) to view the classified section, but I feel like I've saved considerably more than that on some of the deals I've found.

And for the record, I have a couple of factory Savage barrels that shoot better than my Shilen and PacNor premium barrels. All of my factory sporter barrels shoot less than MOA, some much closer to .5 MOA. They might take a little load development to get there, but I think that most factory barrels are capable of that level of accuracy.

Good luck, and if you happen to have any questions feel free to shoot me a PM.

Andrew
