Bad Idea!
« on: August 06, 2010, 10:44:35 AM »
I just got off the phone with a land owner in the Peola area in which I have a bull tag this year, I have been in contact with him this summer to keep relations up and look for in site. His first statement in this conversation was " you and all the people you know need to get in touch with WDFW and tell them that chasing the elk around in 100 degree temps is not a cool idea!" I have heard of this from him and 1 of the other land owners in that area, the game dept is one thing I guess they are supposed to know what is best for the elk but in this case this farmers neighbor is out every day on his 4 wheelers chasing the elk around  :bash:!!!  I personally think that even on private land this is not a called for act that is why they (WDFW) have damage control hunts! Just my  :twocents: I AM PISSED RIGHT NOW! I have put a email in to the appropriate person in this case , Feel free to contact on this issue  :hello:

That's a pretty touchy subject... I definitely agree that you don't like to see this happen but this is in an area that elk are not wanted. they put the fence up to keep them out.

They're probably tearing up the fields and the right thing to do would be contact the game department but I've also heard from a few landowners that the WDFW isn't a whole lot of help in some situations. I don't know the story here but If the farmer can't get the assistance he needs then what options does he have? Sure can't shoot em and you can't wait around when they're doing damage by the minute.

Sometimes the WDFW will give the landowner some #8 12ga loads and let them have at it. Not sure which is worse.

I'd like to know the whole story, could be somewhat okay or totally wrong. :dunno:

yeah, it suck from your hunt standpoint. but from a farmers stand point i can understand protecting your crops. elk and deer can do a lot of damage in very little time. now if they were just doing it to do it, then that is wrong. but if there is crops , i see no harm in keeping them out the best you can to protecting your crops.

Don't get me wrong I totally agree with you, but I know for sure that the WDFW has been in the area alot this spring hearding the elk into the fence, I undersand where the farmer is coming from, I kind of think that it might have a little to do with the high crop yields this year (wet spring, good bushals high prices ) The farmer in questions has told me in personlly that the game dept. has been on top of things this year.  so I don't know  Maybe in regards to my hunt its self after harvest they will back off  :dunno:

There wasn't hardly any elk in there on purpose till the school fire burnt the fence down. They are doing it to prevent damage to the wheat crops. The only reason yoy have the tag you have is because the WDFW don't want the elk in there.

" In today's instant gratification society, more and more pressure revolves around success and the measurement of one's prowess as a hunter by inches on a score chart or field photos produced on social media. Don't fall into the trap. Hunting is-and always will be- about the hunt, the adventure, the views, and time spent with close friends and family. " Ryan Hatfield

Unfornutately this is the truth...  We've had 2 or 3 years of being able to apply for this tag.  The School Fire came through in 2006.  It took a couple years for the state to figure out they had a problem.  Then they started the hazing program and the couple draw tags.  Crops are money, and money is above elk on the food chain.  The 4 or 5 draw bull tags that are given out are a drop in the bucket with respect to the amount of damage the elk do in an evening.

The good news for you is that almost every landonwer you find will give you permission to hunt!
Bring a GPS!  It's awkward to have to eat your buddies!
