Model 70 270 WSM...what ammo do you use?
« on: August 01, 2010, 05:53:57 PM »
I recently picked up a used Model 70 270 WSM with a stainless barell and camo stock. I got it for a great deal and its my first true hunting rifle I own. I purchased a new Leupold VX-3 3.5 x 10 x 40mm with the Booone & Crocket Reticle. I'm waiting for the rings, scope, etc to show up within the next week. I'm very excited to get it set up and shoot it.

My question for those of you that have this rifle is what kind of groupings are you getting with this rifle at 200 yards, and what ammunition are you using for deer? I got this rifle because my group got drawn for elk/deer in montana. I typically do archery for everything, but gonna use the rifle in Montana. CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!

I shoot 140gr accubonds handloads.  It will shoot under an inch at 100 yards.  And under an inch and a half at 200 yards.  I have never shot a group with it past 200 yards.  I love the gun and load that I have for it.  It has a 3.5-10x50 Kahles scope on it that I also love.

Have you come accross any loads that you would stay away from?

I shoot Winchester brass and Sierra 140 and 150 grain BT Game King. I use IMR 4350 and IMR 4064, which is the cleanest powder I've found. I'm loading 51 grains and getting tight groups from my Weatherby Vanguard. I'm a reloading new-bee so I've never shot anything else. I recently got some Blems from Midway USA but haven't shot them yet. They are nice 140 grain polymer tipped. I'll let you know how they do.

I would advise to use the heavier bullet with the 270wsm speed. Do not hit them in the shoulder either with a standard cup core bullet. Right now I am shooting a handloaded Nosler 140gr. Accubond bullet that works really well. I now Federal and Winchester has the 140gr. Accubonds in some of their factory loaded ammo. When I first got my 270wsm I used factory Winchester 150gr. Power Points. Worked very well with first deer shot at 300yds. behind the shoulder in the lungs. But second deer was shot at 85yds. and hit the shoulder(wrong angle) and broke the shoulder. Mind you when that happens the front shoulder being hit is a waste of meat. Now Winchester came out with their new Winchester Power points that suppost to be a bonded bullet rather then a standard cup core bullet. But at the time I started they did not have it yet. So I just started to reload my own ammo. I have good luck with Accurate Arms Mag-Pro powder and the Nosler Accubond bullets. The key is shot placement with the 270wsm speeds. 270wsm is my favorite open terrain cartridge. It hammers them. Just my opinion and experience. Hope this helps.
Nothing like a Remington model 700xcr.

I'm also using the 150 gr Sierra Game kings and getting good groups.  Haven't shot anything other than paper with them yet. :twocents:

I like the Nossler partition .150 grain. Some say its a little light for bigger game but, Its worked well for me. I have'nt had any problems taking down elk or bear with those loads.
