Old coleslaw recipe
« on: August 25, 2010, 06:43:04 PM »
This was handed down from my dad's mother. I love coleslaw and this is the time of year that cabbage is ready to harvest.

Slice up your cabbage and add (as per your discretion)
mayonnaise
sugar
lemon juice from a lemon
vinegar

Sounds good.

I like to make some shore lunch sandwiches with a variation of that recipe.... I put in some old bay seasoning and a speck of celery seed, then top a deepfried fish fillet on a sandwich roll for a great shore lunch. Works great on those perch or bluegill fillets.... Yum!

Friday night fish fries back in Wisconsin just would not be right without some creamy coleslaw.  I like to supplement the mayo with some sour cream.  Gives it a little extra tang.

My grandmother would substitute buttermilk for the mayonnaise and add a little garlic salt, best coleslaw I ever had!

Here is one I really like. All my friends say its the best they have tried.

3 LBS. cabbage

3 ribs of celery

1 onion (yellow)

1 bell pepper

3 carrots

2 C sugar (Hawaiian when you can get it.)

Shred, chop or dice all and mix with sugar. Set cabbage mixture aside.

1/2 Cup of white vinegar

1/2 Cup of Apple Cider vinegar

1/2 C olive oil

1 tsp celery seed

1 tsp (kosher salt)

Bring all to a boil and pour over cabbage mixture and chill overnight.

There is a restaurant around here that makes a spicy peanut slaw for catering that I absolutely adore, but I have never even found anything close to the recipe.

I am monitoring for one of you guys to post something similar :chuckle:

It is possible, but I think it is actually done differently than that.  It actually has peanuts in it, and it is very mild, but give you enough hint of spice that it makes it extremely enjoyable.  O'doherty's in the Valley - He only makes it for Catering, because Slaw doesn't keep very long.  I have called a few times and ordered a pan and he has it waiting for me, for roughly $20.

You are correct as I have asked him for it - which is how we came upon the agreement that I could order a pan from time to time.

Yes sir

Maybe we should order a pan and split it and then we can make our weakest attempts at replacating it?
