Best late September hunt for archery deer in WA?
« on: March 14, 2008, 11:16:24 AM »
If you had the weekend available after early archery elk season ends, where would you go hunting for archery deer?  Looking for suggestions/opinions.

Thanks in advance!

Any of the high cascade wilderness areas.  In September the bucks are still high and you can do some fun spot and stalk hunting.  I would shy away from the units with early rifle hunts, gets a little crowded.

Coon suggested hunting the high Cascades wilderness areas.  In late September, I would avoid those wilderness areas that are open to the modern firearms High Hunt which closes on September 25th.  The Sawtooth Wilderness is not open and would be a decent choice.  There are a few good high country summer range areas that are not designated wilderness and are open only to archery hunters in September.  The High Hunt areas open to archery hunting on September 1st and would be a good choice during the week before the elk archery season opens.

What's wrong with hunting the Alpine Lakes Wilderness (Alpine GMU 249)which is open for deer, bear and elk (Sept. 8 - 21)  "any elk"; in reality nearly all of the elk taken are mature bulls (8 to 12 percent harvest rate).  The deer High Hunt with rifles start on Sept. 15th but not many hunt the elk hot spots.

No moss...you would have to get out of the truck of course and actually hunt the surrounding FS land. The spikes and two points sleep in the cabins. I was talking about a little more wild and bigger deer.

Thanks all for your replies so far.  I really am open to any unit in Wa, east or west.  I will be hunting elk from Sept 12th to the 21st.  Looking for a deer trip for the weekend after.

Please keep the suggestions coming.  I am just looking for opinions on general areas and ideas.

Thanks!
