The only berries
« on: August 31, 2010, 02:10:54 AM »
I was scouting/hunting today and came across tons of nice berries but they are close to a main dirt rd but looks like a great area. Do you guys think the bears will still hit that spot? After all, the berries I did find were the only ones I have seen where iam hunting.

yes they will hit it,I know a very large male that is hanging at the same place every year,Its a huge patch but getting a shot has proven almost nil,he will make a mistake one day,he has no pattern which tough and he is close to a paved rd also..

Just look for sign and you will know if they have been there and they more than likely will return

I keep setting up in an area that is behind an old, gated road system...replanted 15-17yrs ago.

The gate is so close to the highway I have to park on the shoulder, and once you get down the road 50yds it 90°'s and parrallels the highway. It is between a couple VERY popular bear hunting areas, but somehow gets zero pressure (besides myself and my father).

I've seen three bear in there since the season opening, all three times they were heading from higher up in the timber towards the highway.

More than likely the traffic on the road system you are talking about will have the bears a bit skiddish. You'll want to be there before first light and hang around from 6:00 to dark. Hide your scent and leave the truck behind so you can be sneaky. IF there is sign around those berries, you just have to hunt it differently than all the road hunters.  ;)
I left it better than I found it...did you?
I hunt animals because veggies are too easy to stalk.

I like those kind of spots!

It always amazes me how folks just have to get to the top of the mountain, and drive past so many good spots. The problem is, once they fined 'em, your busted, and your spot is ruined. I don't complain much, those folks have as much right as me to hunt public land....I just hate missing the shot 'cause a big bad group of folks did a big human-wave kind of drive through an area I've been scouting all summer. Its happened time and again....almost made me swear off of public land.

Now the problem is worse, but with atv's.
