Mercury 40 HP Electric Start Conversion????
« on: September 09, 2010, 07:18:49 AM »
Just bought a boat that has a 1999 Mercury 40 HP 4 stroke manual start.  Its a little tough to get going and was wondering if they make an electric start conversion kit and if so is it something a guy could do himself?  Price?  Any information would be appreciated!

No, you should send that junk motor to me  :chuckle:

I am betting that all 40hp Merc 4 strokes use the same cases and such so you should have bosses to bolt the starter to somewhere, I have an 01 25hp 4 stroke and it's mounted on the left front of the motor. Assuming the motor has the necessary bosses but doesn't have the toothed flywheel you would need to buy that too, so a flywheel, starter, starter solenoid and some wire if you are going to wire it in yourself or a Quicksilver starter box or w/e you call it for your starter wiring.

I am betting that will be pretty steep, you might be better off getting a used or even blown motor from fleabay for the parts.
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.

This is a 3 cylinder 40 horse, yes?  I believe yamaha made those powerheads for Merc, but not 100% sure.  Look at early Yamaha 4 strokes for parts as well - there's a lot of them out there.

yup 3 cylinder 40 horse.  i think the so have the same cases and all.  Good idea on looking for an older blown motor or something, probly be cheaper than some new kit if they make it.
