Brown trowser moment while out hiking sunday
« on: September 13, 2010, 08:48:30 PM »
I was checking out a short route to a place a friend told me about on sunday and since all the brush was soaking wet from rain I decided to put my pistol in my pack. Well I come to a place with old growth blowdowns everywhere over the trail so Im trying to climb up and over one when I see a limb on a tree 75 ft ahead and 20' up bounce really hard then a little face appeared like a fisher or a martin but as it climbed higher I realized OH C__P thats a cub, WHERES the sow I had a sick feeling like I was going to hit by a mack truck any second as I threw off my pack and started pulling stuff out as quick as I could finally the barrel of my pistol showed up. I quickly loaded it and continued looking in all directions for the sow. Man wheres that sow? 5 minutes pass's by and still no sow now the cub is bawling and I've had enough so I make my way through the tangle of trees to the trail and make haste still looking in all directions as I go. Funny thing is I could hear that cub bawling for 45 minutes while I looked for an old trail 250 yds away. Now its time to head back pass the cub on my way out STILL no sow??? I actually took a couple of pictures this time as it was looking right at me for the longest time. Not sure if the sow had been shot or just planted the cub there while she went on a hunt, doesn't really make sense though. Sure hope she came back cause the cub was very healthy looking and about 15-20#

LOL, you are going to wake up in the middle of the night looking over your shoulder wondering where that sow is.  :yike:

LoL..Now you know to just let the gun get wet and clean/oil it later!
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.

Don't feel too bad. I hate to admit this but many years back, headed back to the Trailhead I stopped to put my .357 into my pack. I was getting close to the lot, knew I'd be seeing people and didn't want the stares and comments. I was going to be thumbing it down the Pass and didn't want to freak a potential ride...

Got my pack back on and maybe ten minutes up the trail I let out a yeehaw at the view from the switchback and was answered by a loud Woof then several more Woofs followed by the Vinemaple parting towards me like the Red Sea. Too steep of a hillside to do anything but use my poles like a spear. Well, this blackie jumped up on one bound to see me and spun 90degrees in midair, sprinting downhill.

I leave my pistol on my hip till I get back to the jeep now... :chuckle:

I could stand to go quite a while without a adreneline rush like that one. Worst thing about it was my pistol is a 16" single shot with a 2x7 scope on it. Not the weapon of choice for close quarters shooting. Maybe next time it'l be my 41 ruger revolver.

cool story. Never had anything like that happen to me. had one pop out of the trees about 10 feet from me at our old cabin past Ashford once but that is about it.
