My first elk ever, plus two more success stories.....
« on: September 19, 2010, 04:34:10 PM »
Hey All,

So, I was pretty stoked to get my first elk ever...and with a bow too! The shot was about 20 yards or less, had a whole herd coming down off the mountain. This was the first spike who was seperate enough to get a clean shot, with no other elk behind him. I cut his artery from the heart, he dropped within 20 yards....an easy drag...10.5 yards from the road. Now, granted I hiked all over the place looking for elk, even botched a 3 hour stalk surrounded by elk (20 yards from a spike...I released poorly somehow and the arrow went below his stomach, bounced off the ground), with 4 cows bedded down within 40 yards. But, my pops wanted to head for the truck, so I got beneath him on the hill and waited for him and our other partner to come down, they spooked a herd and I got the benefit.

My little bro bagged one too, double lung, right near dusk, with a heavy rain. We were able to keep an eye on it, and he shot it twice more to ensure a speedy death, although it really wasnt needed, only did it due to the coming darkness and heavy downpour.

The other hunting partner had a liver shot, we kept an eye on him, he died off in a few, with another arrow as well.

All in all, an excellent trip, 5 bear spotted, I had a bobkitty come up behind me in my blind at 23 yards, dad found an awesome 7 pt shed. Times to remember, and meat in the freezer.
