870 express stock change question(s)

hey quick question for the 870 gurus out there... i bought a used synthetic stock kit for my 870 express mag last summer and i wanted to get it on and ready for this season of duck hunting... i think its all pretty straight forward except im confused how i get the collet ring off the slide part thats still inside the old wood pump part....  it looks like the kit didnt come with that part so i need to get it out of the wood one to use it.  i see 2 divots were it looks like a screw driver would go to turn it but i dont have a flat head screwdriver thats wide enough and im scared of making a mess of the thing beating on it.  anyone know what to use to loosen that lock ring on the top? or have a suggestion?  ive been beating my head against the wall all day trying to think of something wide enough to reach both grooves but narrow enough to fit down there and so far ive drawn a blank.

Hello there,

I'm unsure of your terminology so please bear with me as I hope I'm answering your question.

Your forend pump grip (the wood part) is on the forend tube but you're wondering how to get the forend nut off.  It's a black ring with two evenly spaced square divots in it, right?

This is removed using a "forend wrench."  They can look like a gavel with the heavy end having two metal protrusions that fit in the forend nut and you just turn it off.  Or some look like a flat metal spacer that you twist it off with.  Some other models look like a T wrench.

But if you don't have any of those, pliers will work as well.  Just spread the plier ends apart, put them in the notches and carefully wrench it off.

You can purchase them at Brownell's, Midway USA, etc. etc. and they should be around $ 20 - $ 40.

If you were near Bellingham I'd just do the work for you!

If you don't want to buy one and just need to unscrew the forend nut one time and screw it back on one time, you can always do the pliers trick... I've done it before and it's fine.

Or politely ask any gunshop in your area to borrow theirs for the 30 seconds it'll take to use it.

i better pick one up.  i own 3 different 870's im sure ill put it to use.  this is the first time ive changed anything on one of them though.  i had no idea a special tool would be requered... figures.  anyways ill pick one up this week.  ive got a few weeks before ducks season.

I got a wrench for that and it's essentially just a piece of 1/8'" metal that is 1-1/4" wide x 2-1/4" long . Go to the garage and cut one.

When I change mine I just use a pair of needle nose pliers.  Open them up until they are in the notches and turn.  Works if you dont have the tool or want to pay for it.  i have also seen people cut a nail so that it fits into the notches then turn it with a pair of pliers.

A piece of flatbar and turn it with piers also work,  Once you "break it loose" you can hand crank them out with the flatbar.  A wrench for the job is best but I like to Mcgiver things  .
