Biking for Birds
« on: September 18, 2010, 08:55:05 AM »
I'm writing an article for Game & Fish magazine and am looking for turkey hunters that use a mountain bike to access hunting areas.  Also would like to see photos of your bike and how you've got it tricked out and general photos of successful turkey hunts.

 :hello:
You may want to check with the Tacoma Chapter (www.tacomanwtf.org).  Some of them do bike for birds and even have a little article on their site about it.

I have biked for birds myself, but not for a few years and only for the easterns here on the wetside of the state.  Gets a little dicey going in before daylight sometimes ... rocks have a tendency to leap out in front of you at times.   :dunno:   Its mostly uphill going in and can be a real workout that early in the morning.  :bdid:     Then there is always a few that will want to borrow your bike if you don't ride further than they are willing to walk.   :bash:  Then if you get a flat, broken chain, etc., it can turn into the wrong thing you end up packing out.  Have you ever had to ride out in 6 inches of snow ... you get really flying down those hills and just can't see those pesky rocks jumping out in front of you !   :yike:

Then you finally get way back in by yourself and the birds start coming in ... that's when the kids on the quads and motorbikes come roaring up ... or the Mexican tree planters with keys to the gate driveup ... or the curious hikers that hear the funny turkey sounds come walking thru your setup to find them.  >:(

Stop laughing ... it ain't funny ... well, just maybe a bit!  :chuckle: :chuckle:

Used to bike for bears in western WA.  May be biking for turkeys this spring.  Timber company just purchased some of the land I normally hunt and rumor has it they may put a gate across the main dirt road heading in.  Kind of hope they do because our relatively secret area for almost 10 years has been swarmed by 4-wheelers the last couple of years   :'(

Not much of a setup on the mountain bike.  Have used the gun mounts on the handle bars in the past but quickly learned that is just asking for a crash.  Put the gun or strap the bow to the back and the pack secured to the rack over the back tire.  Then be sure to tuck the bike in the bushes and throw some branches over it

Think I recognize that turkey as the one that tried stealing my bike last year ... lets put a APB (all points bird) and get him in a line-up asap !
