ER Shaw barrels
« on: October 23, 2010, 04:52:21 PM »
Can anyone here tell me if they have purchased and used a ER Shaw rifle barrel on their Rem 700 action. Was thinking of getting a 23' stainless, helical fluted 223 barrel with a one in eight twist. Would like to hear from those of you that have experience with them.
You don't need a flatter shooting rifle or a larger caliber. What you need is good field marksmanship. Jeff Cooper.

did own a Mossberg 800 years ago that had an ER Shaw barrel on it, nice bluing very accurate for being on a mossberg action with an atrocious trigger. not bashing Mossbergs, just that 1 had a trigger that you pulled, and pulled, and pulled and then took your cheek off stock wondering "is this ever gonna go off?" the barrel I had was a 358 Winchester and like I said very accurate.

I had a Mauser action rebarreled to 338-06 by ER Shaw. I was absolutely satisfied with the results. The barrel shot at least MOA groups with most loads, and just slightly over with anything else. They are an excellent hunting barrel IMHO. There are more accurate barrels out there, but they'll cost you a good bid more $.

I bought a 6x47 barrel from them and rechamberred it to 6mm-204 and it works very good.  I have it on a Savage action.  I believe thier rem barrels come short chamberred and you have to finish chamberring them to get the headspace correct.  That's if your just buying the barrel.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

I've only had one, a .257 Roberts that I bought used with the shaw barrel on it, it shot fine for a hunting rifle but shaw is not in the same league as the more expensive custom barrels.
You wont save that much over a pacnor or similar.
A barrel is a going to last a long time so over the long run spending the money on a good custom barrel isn't a bad way to go.
