Capital Forest
« on: October 05, 2010, 08:53:41 AM »
Hello all, 1st time poster, a very long time reader. I was curious to if anyone here enjoys hunting the Capital forest area? The last time I hunted it, it was over 3yrs ago and I was lucky to pull out a Forker, my buddy put his tag on a beautiful 3x3. The reason why I havent returned to this area in 3yrs is due to my buddy, he turned into a pansy arse on me...LOL. He hems-&-haws over going out anymore so I had to write him off as a hunting partner. Anyways, on with the purpose of this post, does anyone hunt this area and if so, hows the deer population looking this year? Its not to far from me and being I'm a lone hunter now, the area is fairly easy to traverse, for safety reasons. Any info on the area on how the deer population is doing would be fantastic. For all those that hunt, I hope each and everyone of you fill your tags...Peace Brothers.

I hunted it last week with muzzleloader.  I passed on a couple spikes but never saw any other bucks.  I think the bears and coyotes are getting most of the fawns.  Out of all the does I saw last week, only one or two had fawns.  That said, there are still bucks to be had out there......I think the bucks will be easier to find with some nastier weather and more leaves falling.
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

I just hunted it 9 days in a row, the entire early muzzleloader season, and saw a 2 point and 4 spikes in that time. I'll continue to hunt there because it's close to home and I know it well, but for next year I'm going to be scouting other GMU's where access isn't so easy and deer numbers are higher. I have no doubt that the deer in Capitol Forest get hammered by poachers year around. Then with the brush pickers, hikers, shooters, motorcycle riders, mountain bikers, horseback riders, etc. I think the deer that are in there are mostly nocturnal.

Hey guys, thanks for the input thus far. Honestly I totaly forgot about all the ATV trails that place has, thinking back on it NOW, I do recall alot of torn up trails due to them  :bash:

I remeber a few hard to access clear cuts up off the C-line, are they still logging and gating off a few of the areas?

Quite a bit of logging going on right now. But very few gates. 99% of the clearcuts can be driven into.
