« on: October 12, 2010, 03:57:48 PM »
So as i was feeling up some guns at a gun shop i frequent i came across a 300 H&H that caught my interest, but i no nothing of this cartridge, dont know of anyone that has one or shoots one.
So any info first hand from someone who owns one?
I googled it and got some info.

I don't but my buddy back in MO shoots one.  Kinda hard to get ammo for it.  He reloads all his.  Great shooting rifle, an old remington I think.  Similar in nature to a .300 Win Mag.
Look man, some times you just gotta roll the dice

It is very, very similar to a 300 Win. Mag. I don't know the exact ballistics for each but I have been told that drops and muzzle velocity are almost identical. However, I think it would be more of a challenge to get ammo, components, etc. because it is an older, probably less popular rifle than the 300 win mag in this day and age.

Buddy has one.  They were the most popular 30 cal mag (in fact the very first one) until the 300 winmag came on the scene.  Also knows as the "Super 30".  Has a cool factor to it, but if you don't reload, you're looking at $50+ for a box of shells.  Old case design, designed for the solid cordite powder (not granular, but it came in small sticks).  They'd load the powder, then form the neck.
Anyway, it is on a magnum-sized action, whereas the 300 winmag is on a long rifle (30-06 sized) action.  What type of gun is it?  721 rem?  Model 70?

Having to reload for it is no problem.
It is a Remington model 700bdl classic, they only made them in 1983 in 300 H&H so that is what has me liking it, also a caliber i dont have.
It is also wearing a lupy 3x9, i did not look at the scope very closely to see which lupy itis, but i think it had a gold ring?
Pirce scared me a bit at 675.

That's not a bad price. The scope is probably the Vari X-II and would be worth about $200 by itself. So the rifle is $475 which I think is a fair price if it's in good condition. Nothing wrong with the 300 H&H. I think it falls right between the 30-06 and 300 Win Mag ballistic wise. you can't beat the Remington 700.

I inherited a Remington model 721 300 H&H from my father. My reload is 66.0grs. of H4831sc behind a Nosler 200gr. Partition bullet. Scoped it with a Leupold VX III 1.5x5x20mm with duplex reticle, Weaver one piece base and Warne rings. Sighted dead on at 200yds. Dad has killed deer and elk with this gun several years ago. I will let you know after this weekend on deer and couple week for elk.
Nothing like a Remington model 700xcr.

I have a Winchester model 70 I got it new in 1991. I really liked it until it started splitting cases. My only advice is don't overload them. I looked into rebarreling it, but that is about as expensive as going and buying a new rifle. I will own another one, when I find one and I have the extra money laying around ;)

I have a Remington Model 721 300 H&H, and I love it.  I bought it a few years ago through the nickelads and I was lucky enough to get reloading dies in the deal.  I've reloaded 150 grain bullets for target practice...I can't afford to shoot at anything other than a monster mulie with the $60 per box price tag.  I've only killed a few deer with it, hopefully after this weekend it will be one more   :)
