Thank you Mister Farmer / Land owner
« on: October 17, 2010, 08:56:57 AM »
If your a member and see this thread Thank You.  And to all other land owners who allow hunter to harvest game on the land...THANK YOU!!!

My wife drew a second deer (doe) tag this year.  It is in a place that has a ton of private land.  We have hunted the BLM land before and knew with a little effort we could get a doe.  So opening morning we  set off 1 hour before light.  We get set up on a ridge and wait for the sun to come up.  When it does we immediately spot two deer.  Wouldn't you know it two bucks (2 pt's).  We can shoot a doe or a 3pt min.  :bash:  After about 3 hours of sitting we decide to take the game to the deer.  We set off on a death march.  10 miles later we still have not shot a deer.  We have seen another spike and one doe that had a fire lit under her a$$....must have been pushed by other hunters.  Four oclock in the afternoon my wife has blisters and I am exhausted.  We have a 3 hour drive home so we decide to abandon the hunt early.  We head for the truck.  On our way out we spot deer everywhere in the farmers fields...I wish I was a farmer  :chuckle:  :chuckle:.  I was having so much fun looking at deer we decide to take the long route out.  This is where it gets good.  We spot what looks like a farmer......White dodge flatbead with alfalfa in the the back.  We stop and ask him if he knew who owned the property right down the road.  We tell him we have a doe tag and there were does about 70 yards off the road.  He gently waived his hands toward the the field and said, "Go, just watch out for the cows."  Five minutes later large doe down and an end to a successful trip.   :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL:   Again thank you mister farmer for your hospitality.

Cool story!  Sounds like a good place to drop off a couple packages of jerky to say thanks.

I agree.  There are still some decent farmers out there who will allow hunters to hunt there property.  However I would not be too hard on all farmers for not allowing people to hunt their property.  Most often it is us HUNTERS who screw it up and forcing a farmer to ban hunting from their property.  Unfortunately there are alot of SLOBS amongst us who ruin it for the others.  About 90% of the time in my experience the event that "Ruins" it for us all involves a 4wheeler.  I mean honestly when hunting in wheat fields how lazy can you be to "Have" to use a 4wheeler?   In any case usually a slob "hunter" drives his 4wheeler across a wheatfield tearing up a farmers field because they "needed" it to recover their deer.  If my brother and I wouldn't have told on some "hunters" doing this last year we would have lost some pretty good private dirt.

For those that hunt private dirt do us all a favor and leave your ATV's at home.  You don't need them and its alot easier to get permission if you leave them at home.  Most farmers I know wont give you permission if they even suspect you own an ATV anyways.  Also don't litter, cut fences, start fires or shoot in the direction of houses.  Respect the property and you can use it forever.  But do something disrespectful and ruin it for us all.   >:(  The farmer gave you respect by allowing you the privelege to hunt on his land, show him the same by leaving his property the way you found it.  Or make it better.  I always pick up trash if I see it even if I didn't leave it there.

So to all the farmers that have been burned before by stupid slob "hunters"  and still allow others like myself to hunt in your yard.  Thankyou so much and I am eternally gratefull.

Almost forgot.  A funny story from last year.  So during modern deer season last year found me BLRman and Buckmaster_WA in Eastern Washington.  And this guy that was camped nearby could not get permission to hunt from anybody.  He was kind of bummed out.  Well this guy was a very proud UW Husky fan.  He had a UW hat and a big UW decal on the back of his truck.  We all suggested that he remove the UW hat and the UW decal and go buy a WSU hat and he'd have far better luck getting permission.

The guy told us we were full of it and that couldn't possibly be the reason.  Well to conclude this story that guy probably put on 100s of miles that weekend and never left the truck because he refused to believe that farmers living withing 50 miles of WSU would be like that.    :chuckle:  Silly naive man.  So for you West Siders hoping to score some private dirt.  Leave the UW apparal at home.  Swallow your pride and embrace the Crimson :chuckle:

Very true, and you'd better be conversant in the last 10 years of Cougar football, because the farmers will be, and that's all the conversation will be about.

I couldn't agree more....Thankfully I graduated from WSU and own a red/crimson truck  :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL:  GO COUGS

I will add, this farmer seemed hesitant when we first approached him.  I think what broke the ice is when I told him we had seen the deer earlier but would not hunt them without permission.  I ask him if he knew who owned the land, thats when I think he made the decision to let us hunt.  I think he respected that because so many people just shoot, scoop and run.  I have seen this happen many times and when reported nothing seems to be done about it.  As a matter of fact when we were walking back to the truck following the morning hunt two guys driving by stopped to talk.  They said, "just drive the roads until you see a doe and shoot her, no body will care."   :bash: :bash: :bash:

that is a great story man. I think a lot of farmers on the east side dont' realize how much some of us really REALLY appreciate them letting us work their land. It's like winning the lotto. My brother and I typically take west side game with us (like fresh salmon steaks, smoked steelhead, etc) as a token of our gratitude when a farmer lets us on their land.

:yeah: Last Year when My son and I had late whitetail buck tags in the palouse, I PROUDLY wore my WSU hat, and the first farmers door we knocked on he aasked if we were going to the game that afternoon...A total ice breaker and he let us hunt his 20000 acre farm no problem.  :chuckle: It was awesome! Pride goes along way stupid husky fans!!! SO you drive 5 hours to eastern washington to hunt, couple hundred $ on gas and hotel, but you won't by a 15 $ hat... :bash: Ya and we did kill a nice buck. :IBCOOL:
OH YA.. Michael Vick should have used HUSKIES!!!!  :dunno: :chuckle: :chuckle: GO UTES!
