how many shots
« on: October 23, 2010, 08:51:31 PM »
this is my first year with a rifle. this mornong i saw a hunter at barely leagel light empty 2, 4 round clips, then three more shots, then 3minutes later 2 more shots then one more. :mgun: thats 14 shots from one hunter. i know as a bowhunter that if i emptyed my qwiver on a animal that i would be heading back to camp and check my stuff. is it normal to just keep shooting till its down or out of bullets? i past on a heavy 3 point last weekend because it was trotting strait away at 100 yards and didnt stop till it was 450yards away. i can shoot that far but didnt want to chance wounding it. i use a 30-06 with a hornady 150 balistic tip. i know it would go down IF I HIT IT. what are your guys thoughts. it seems like most of the guys on here are smart hunters. i lack a little rifle expiearence. thanks guys. :mgun:

I think many rifle hunters have either heard or visually witnessed this kind of ridiculous behavior. I personally have only killed one deer, but have also only ever fired one shot at a deer. I have put hundreds of rounds through my hunting rifle because I will not shoot at game if I am not very confident that I can make a fatal shot with the first shot. Things do happen, but if I'm not confident in that first shot, I'll get closer, or pass. My  :twocents:

I agree I know some people that carry 15 shells which it think is crazy. I only carry 6 with me and at times I think that is to many since I do not plan on taking a shot that I do not think I can make. Some people just need to practice more instead of picking the gun up a week before the season. :twocents:

There are people like that just about every where you go. I have heard some tremendous vollies of ammo even back in Pennsylvania modern deer season. Its everywhere!

Yeah, opening day is a friggin' circus!  I saw a guy unload 3 rounds on a herd of muleys with a buck in it.  I told PathfinderJR to get ready, they were going to run right past us, he got set up, and when they trotted over the hill, the only thing we saw was a slick 2x2.  I thought "Well, maybe they hit a deer that we didn't see go down." So, I took a peek over the hill at them.  They were standing there looking over at us.  They had been shooting at the 2x2.  Good thing they didn't hit it.
Idiots. >:( >:(

I lost a really nice deer because I went with the "one shot" method.  I shoot until they are down.  When I killed my elk, It was like the terminator...I hit it 7 times, they were all "kill" shots.  Didn't damage much meat.

Every deer I have killed has been a one shot, one kill. Neck shot on 3 of them, 4 have been body shots. Shot placement is key. That is why I love my .270

I've never shot more than twice at a deer. After that, buck fever usually makes any more shots useless anyway. If I can't kill it with 2 shots, then I should spend a lot more time at the range. Elk and bears are a different story.

1 shot....257 yards up hill. Dropped in his tracks.  I carry 5 in the gun and 6 extra. Not for deer but other critters that like meat also. Shot placement everybody.  Shot placement.

Yup, 14+ rounds is too much IMO, anyone who needs THAT many to kill 1 animal would probably have better luck going after it with a spear...

I usually head out with 3 in the clip, 1 in the chamber and 4 attached to the sling. Enough to down whatever I'm going after and  deter/kill anything that may want to take it from me
Theres plenty of room for all of gods animals.... right next to the mashed potatoes!

This does not suprise me, this is just one of the reason I archery hunt.  I bet 70% of rifle hunters dont even pick up there rifle till they are leaving for hunting camp.  All i can say is have fun in the pumpkin patch.  With that being said I bet 70 % of archers dont pick up there bow till they are leaving for camp.. People just dont understand that if your are prepared and organized you have a lot bigger chance of being sucessful. 14 f-ing rounds geez laweeez.

I take 15 in when I am hunting extended periods of time.  That last few deer I shot were 1 shot 1 kill.  I want to have a few for sight ins if I fall hard on the scope.

yes in theory you need one shot placed well, i  start pack'in ammo up to my blind about september that way  i am not over loaded opening day,  i get about 100 clips with 50   rounds   each stock piled and then i know i have  enough. some days its like a fire fight up there  . one thing i learned is you can never have too much ammo :chuckle:

I have an belt ammo pouch for each one of my hunting rifles.  My magnums carry four rounds in the gun and 8 in the pouch, my standard calibers all carry five in the gun and 10 on the belt.  I truly do not remember the last time I shot more than twice at any animal, deer, bear, elk or Moose.  My guess if somebody shot 14 times they knocked it down the first shot and then buck fever took over as he tried to finish it and he sprayed the ground all the way around it.   I'm not sure I've ever hunted somewhere where I could shoot at an animal 14 times. :dunno:
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.

I carry 4 in the clip and a few in my pack (just in case), but I think if I can't hit with two I'll be reevaluating my situation.....

*censored* happens he got excited and screwed up his first shot then was shooting at a running buck would be my guess. Last year I counted 27 shots from 3 guys at a 2x3

I always carry just six rounds. Three in the gun and three in pocket. In 35+ years of hunting have only had to shoot one deer more than once. Both shots were in the boiler room.
You don't need a flatter shooting rifle or a larger caliber. What you need is good field marksmanship. Jeff Cooper.

I carry nine. That's what fits in my sidesaddle, and the four in my gun comes from that nine.

14 shots? Sounds like:  a.  new hunter, new gun
                                b.  new hunter, old gun
                                c.  old hunter, new gun
                                d.  old hunter, new ex-wife

When i hunt bwith my rifle i have a cartrige holder that goes on my belt that holds 12 rounds. My gun holds 5 and those come from the holder. Of all the deer I've killed I have only shot at one more then one time. I ended up takeing 4 shots at that deer. I have always followed the rule Keep shooting till its down. Of those four shots 2 missed. I'm guessing it was the last two cause of buck fever. The two shots that hit would of killed the deer. He just didn't know it yet and was still moving. When I hunt with my muzzy I have 4 spead loads in my pocket, and a couple more back at camp. If I can't get it done with that many I'm going home.
It's not the size of the trophy that make's it a trophy.
