nightmares
« on: October 29, 2010, 01:13:58 PM »
yesterday was one of those days where you biggest hunting dreams are about to come true and at the blink of an eye they are pulled just out of reach. well in this case missed!

i got up at 5am to make the 1 1/2 hour drive to matlock pulling up to the gate with perfect timing to get all my gear ready and drive it just as legal shooting hour rolls around. on the 18th i seen a monster blacktail only to not get a shot, 4x4 with eyeguards and pushing a whopping 140". so this morning i was heading right back to where i seen the monster. as i make my way down to where i seen the buck the previous week i noticed movement out of the corner of my eye. a quick look produced a doe and a button buck. as i stepped out the the truck to glass the surrounding area i noticed the doe stare straight at a little bush. quickly i glanced at the bush to see nothing but head and antlers makes thier way around the bush. HOLY SH$T its the buck ive been dreaming about the last week. quickly i got back to the truck and grabbed my gun. as i got back around the truck for a shot the buck had only made if a few feet walking slowly away at 40yds. i have a little whistle and he stopped, i took a steady aim and BOOM! miss  :bash: the buck ran 100+ yds and stopped broadside, big mistake buddie i just went to the range and zero'd my gun in the day before. i took a steady rest on a stump and let loose another round BOOM!!! the buck takes off and i watch him run 500 yards through this clear cut and out of my sight. I MISSED!!!  :bash:

i searched for blood just incase for about an hour, wasting what was left ideal hunting hours.

later on that day i hunted the trees the big buck went into, and hunted them hard. i jumped him 2 more times but never got a good look let alone a shot.

as the day went on i seen planty of deer and other bucks. but just couldnt get a shot. after missing the buck of my dreams and the biggest blacktail i have ever seen in person. i lost all confidence in my shooting ability and just couldnt get myself to pull the trigger on another deer that day.

nightmares will haunt my as i sleep over this buck. i have 2 more days of the general season and the late hunt. and i will be spending them after this buck.

1st order of business is to check your rifle. Deer are pretty big at 40, and 100yds. Buck fever or no.

Things happen, guns get knocked over, etc. If you missed at 40 yds, and again at 100yds, I'm hopeful something's wrong with your rifle.

You probably pulled something I've done many times.  Held your breath.  I have missed some stupid easy shots by simply holding my breath thinking  it helps or just because i've forgotten to breath.  It took me awhile to break myself from it. I havent missed since. Really focus on your breathing. I had to tell myself everytime i saw an animal from yote to bear breath breath breathe.   Good Luck...
