Steelhead in the Puyallup?
« on: October 30, 2010, 07:26:13 AM »
New to fishing the river this year.  Is there a decent run of winter steelhead in the Puyallup, and do you fish them the same as Salmon drifting Corkies and yarn?

hey dave welcome.  Not to many steelhead in the puyallup.  But yes generally you can use the same gear.  Eggs are a plus too.  You might want to head to blue creek down on the cowlitz.  I moved over to the east side of the mountains and don't get a chance to fish as much as I would like too.  So I can't tell you where the fish are but get out on the river and somone will get you some info.

In so thick, that you can walk across their bac ;)ks!  Nah, maybe in 1953 when it was like the Puy's heyday!  Hatchery is lucky to scratch out a half dozen returns per winter.

steelhead will bite a corky and yarn a helluva lot better than any salmon(well, maybe a humpy) will!
you can still get gas in heaven, and a drink in kingdom come,

Steelhead in this river system are going to be hard to get.  Just not that many that go through the Puyallup.  The fish will be headed to the Carbon or White.  Eggs/ sandshrimp or jigs under a bobber, or regular C & Y with scent drift gear will do.  Never had luck with spoons in that glacier water.  The Carbon when it clears up would be the best bet.  Good luck.
