9/11/2010 Archery Cow Elk
« on: November 07, 2010, 02:42:39 AM »
I got the picture from my wife finally.  Anyway I got a chance to hunt 4 days this archery season while on my RNR.  We just had a Baby and so I couldn't get anymore days :'( .  We drove to my parents in South Bend Fri 9/10 and I got everything ready for me to go out.  Sat 9/11 I woke up at 5:30 and headed south towards Nassele to meet up with everyone camped who got the whole 2 weeks.  I got to camp at 6:05am and when I pulled they were up drinking coffee.  Literally 1 min after I sat down we heard a bugle not 200 yards from camp.  I am thinking yehaww lets go get him.  At first light 2 of us walk up the road  2 others take the truck down below and we make our move.  Got 30 yards into the trees and the bull is bugling 100 yards at most just down the hill.  We setup I stay back and call and my buddy's little brother goes ahead.  Off to my right I hear a crack I look over and there is a cow walking away from me at 30 yards.  I drew and smacked her right behind the shoulder quartering away.  She went 10 yards and tumbled to the ground.  The weirdest thing happend as she went down she threw up all over the place.  you can see it in the pictures never seen this happen and it was very strange :dunno:.  After the pictures I was messing around with me reed and I let out a cow call and who answers but the bull.  We leave the cow and try and setup on him never did catch a glimpse but he came in to about 80 yards.  Lots of blowdown and its real think just below where the cow died so I was not surprised he didn't want to come in and close.  Cool thing is while we were talking with him the other 2 guys sneaked right in on the herd from the bottom and got a shot at a cow but shot under her. :yike:

My hunt was over before it even started had the elk in the freezer at the liquor store by 10:10 and had breakfast in front of me at 10:30 in the cafe.  I hunted 1 more day with my Friends called in 1 bull but no shot for my Buddy's little brother.  Sunday I went back to South Bend and early Monday morning my Dad  go out to his "SPOT"  We got 2 miles in and I let out a cow call.  Bam 2 bulls answer from 2 different spots one obviously larger than the other.  We of course went towards the bigger sounding bull :-).  I set up 80 yards behind him and I started calling took about 20 min and here he came The bull bugled at 20 yards from my Dad rocking the draw must have been real loud for him.   Then the bull took off without warning.  He Bugled again when he got back to 150 yards or so and that was the last we heard of him.  I went over to him thinking maybe he had shot come to find out the bull came into 10 yards of him but all he could see was the bulls legs in the thick brush.  As we were talking we heard a crack over to the right , and out steps a 4x4 at 50 yards.  To many branches for him to take a shot safely and we had to watch him walk away.  Amazing 3 days right?
Well now its Tues morning we go to another one of his "spots"  in this 6 year old clearcut that he sees lots of deer in since I have a tag.  We go down a short road and I tell him lets setup see if there is anything that will answer.  He goes to the end at the wall of firs and finds a shooting lane.   I stay back 50 or so yards and let out a locator.  Not a sound in reply, but my Dad looks back and gives me the sign that he hears footsteps, (BTW he has a hearing aid and is having issues hearing even a 200 yard bugle) I think to my self yeah right he didn't hear anything.  Well just as I was thinking that a bull puts his head through the brush about 5-6 feet from my dad and lets out a loud snort that even I heard and Tears off through the clearcut  my Dad had been so surprised and the snort was so loud in his ear he actually jumped hehehe.  Man what a great 4 days even if I had not gotten an elk could have been the best 4 days hunting in a row since I got my Bull.

Before you all start up Yes I have a full quiver I keep it full with an arrow knocked unless I am gonna be in the thick stuff.  The kill shot is under her and so is the arrow.  not a pass through the arrow stuck in her right shoulder. No blood cause she never had a chance to bleed, oh yeah the tag is in her right ear tied on with some twine :P :chuckle: :chuckle:

Here is the COW

Great story & nice archery kill. That is a great day when you are eating breakfast at 10:30 at the cafe and done for the season. The disclaimers were sad to me that you had to analyze your picture and cut off the negative responses. You did it in a joking way but had concerns already. People shouldn't worry posting their successes.  Thanks again, I enjoyed the story & pics. Mike
