okanogan area cougars with dog permit
« on: November 13, 2010, 10:14:45 PM »
my cousin got drawn for a cougar permit with dogs up in the okanogan area. he has been researching and scouting his upcoming hunt and i told him i would try to help him out. anybody have any ideas of where is a good area for him to really start to concentrate his scouting, he lives on the liberal side so its tough to make it out there every weekend, trying to juggle his family and his passion. thanks

Congt. Hope u get one.  Lookout pack wolves killed Bonnie blacktan hound under tree. Blue bluetick  hound suffer head torn downhill and died recetly.  U gotta try be close where your dog going. Keep eye on fresh wolves trax. U don't want loose ur dogs.  Don't use bell collar, up to u.
u will do just fine and work with dogs as possible and don't let them run all night.

Enjoy hunting. Post pictures......

what kind of elevations were u cutting the tracks time2hunt and also what kind of elevations should they be concentrating their efforts at or does the snow kind of dictate that. appreciate the responses and looking for any other info. from what i understand the hunt boundaries are from 97 west to trail 2000 north to canada from a little south of winthrop and twisp. starts in december till end of march. thanks

We were bow hunting the 101 Sherman unit this past weekend and also cut cougar tracks in two different locations..... so they are out there!  What kind of hounds are they going to be running?

First you better clarify what side of the river the permit is valid for.  Okanogan or Ferry/Okanogan.  That makes a big difference on where you need to be getting your information.  Does this person have dogs??

If he has dogs, I assume he knows how to use them and has hunted the big cats before.  Any terrain that looks like cat country could hold a cat in that neck of the woods, so I would imagine he shouldn't have a problem getting in on some action.  I haven't looked at the quota, but shooting females usually doesn't sit well the local dog boys.
