An old indian hook-tender that I had used to tell us that those are the spirits of all the loggers that got killed in the brush.  That's why the always come to help you eat your lunch.  I'm always amazed at how you don't see many until you stop to eat, and then they are all around.  We always give them a little to eat, helps pass that down time in the middle of the day.

never heard that either, always give them some of my lunch. Nice way to pass time and it doesn't hurt me to miss a little bit of food.

I've always liked those things.  I tell them if they would just point me to a buck/bull they flew over I would make sure that they would get fed that night.
