Bushnell Backtrack gps
« on: November 17, 2010, 08:11:40 PM »

Does anyone use this device? I found it pretty cheap and am thinking about getting one. It seems like it would work good just to point me in the right direction if I get disoriented. Some of the reviews on Cabelas are pretty low though

true, have a compass and basic understanding of using it. But compass doesnt work for getting exact spots I want to get back to. Unless your really good at triangulating coordinates

I know this is an old thread but I came across it looking up GPS recomendations.

I have used the Bushnell Back track for three years now. Same Batteries as I put in it brandnew ( I carry others just in case). It works pretty darn good. It has worked flawlessly for basic get back to the truck, kill, or camp tasks. It takes awhile to lock onto a satilite, but it always locks on as long as you can stand under a small opening in the trees.

I agree with Lincoln. I have one and it is way more handy than I had ever thought it would be.

My brother in law brought one out to our anual coyote hunti so we decided to give it a try.  We got to the top of a hill and could see the truck about a quarter milew away and the BackTrack told us that the truck was in a different direction.  Cabelas gave him his money back and he bought a better compass.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

I got one, and it seems to work good.  A couple of weeks ago I was testing it out while on a hike and at one spot I could see the truck, but the pointer was showing 180 degrees in the opposite direction.  Turned out I was standing under some big power lines and they were interfering with the signal.  Once I moved away from the power lines, the pointer moved back in the direction of the truck.  Another thing I learned when I had my Garmin, was to keep the GPS unit away from my cell phone.  The signal from the satelites is so faint that the cell phone cuts it right off.  Even when you aren't using a cell phone it is sending a signal to the cell tower, so it still affects the GPS if it's close to it.
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

When Bernie Madoff did it, it's called a "Ponzi Scheme"
When Government does it, it's called "Social Security"

I say if you have a smart phone get the cabelas recon app. For 6 bucks its awesome. You don't need cell service to use it either. All the features of a top dollar gps. Mark points track anf track back.Has more roads bodies of water than any map I have ever used. Very detailed maps and also satelite mode. And you can mark point out in the field and then look at them on the computer at home. Also you can share way points with others with the app. And the gps is very accurate.

I haven't had much of a chance to use mine as I always forget it but I always have a compass handy too. I bought the Backtrack 5 and like the coordinates, time, altitude and temperature on it.
