Recovering elk
« on: November 19, 2010, 04:52:41 PM »
What's the latest on Weyco rules if you have an elk down in the evening after they close the gates?  No camping, but how the heck are you supposed to get from one end of the property back to the gate?  There used to be a deal where you could call an 'after hours' hotline for them to open the gates for recovery, but is it still going on?

That is a good question and I'm curious to know the answer to it as well.

I killed a cow in the Toutle unit a couple years ago late in the afternoon w/ a muzzleloader.  By the time we got it packed over to the truck and loaded it was almost dark.  Then by the time we raced all the way back to the gate it was about 15 min. past the time they were supposed to lock up the gate.  I figured we got lucky and the guy that was supposed to lock the gate was a little late.  I was really sweating it thinking that we were going to get stuck in there.
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

Have the security phone # with you.  Call them, they will allow you to get the animal out and lock up behind you.  Have your tag #, and license plate # handy.

Done it several times over the years.
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Calling an illegal alien an 'undocumented immigrant' is like calling a drug dealer an 'unlicensed pharmacist'.

Great!  I would assume the security number is different than the hotline.  Now to track down that one.

This is the number that was in the packet, that I got last year when my group drew Toutle.

  1-800-458-0274

We used it last year in the early season, it just so happened that the security patrol was in the area to open the gate for us.  However there is no hunting by anyone helping with the retrieval to the downed game if they are in the vehicle with you.

What if you don't own a cell phone or if you do have one, but it doesn't have service in that area? I guess you just have to bring camping gear and plan on sleeping overnight behind locked gates. And then get busted for camping but what other choice would you have? What sort of ticket does a guy get from illegally camping on Weyerhaeuser? Trespassing ticket I guess?

Bobcat, my worst case scenario plan includes walking out after the quarter job to retrieve the truck, drive to within cell coverage, then meet at the gate for entry.

Note: Weyerhauser isn't always able to let folks in.  If they have security in the area, they will, but if no one is scheduled for where your at, it could be a long wait.  The folks from the phone center/ security center will let you know.  :hello:
May that for which I prepare never come to pass.
