My Grandfathers Mt.Spokane Cow moose hunt
« on: November 23, 2010, 03:19:18 PM »
Well I guess I ought to fill ya'll in my grandfathers Mt.Spokane Moose hunt.
On Oct.14 Gramps, Dad, and myself jumped in the rig and headed over to Newport to meet up with a guy who was a friend of a friend. Lets just call him Don. Don told us where his buddy had been seeing some cows and calves off and on and it was on state land to boot. We arrived just in time to head up this road and get a feel for the territory before dark. It was a brushy road and did not offer much of a view at all, but we did see fresh cow and calf tracks crossing the road in a couple of places.
Friday morning we hunted up this road and drove it 3 or 4 times, we saw a bunch of grouse and picked a bunch of chantrells but no moose. We did however cut fresh tracks going across our tracks from the night before so this kept us interested. By the time 2pm rolled around gramps was getting a bit tired and sore from sitting in the truck for so long so we headed back to town for lunch and a nap. 4pm rolled around and dad said it was go time so we jumped in the truck and headed for the same road. Well we got about a 1/4 mile in on the state land and I happen to catch something odd out of the corner of my eye. I back up the truck and get out to look down the brushy hill at what I may have seen. Low and behold 30 yards down the hill is a cow moose looking at me. Gramps jumps out and the rest is history, one shot and down. It was pretty unfortunate that he was not able to go down the hill to the animal (way to steep) so there is no pictures of him with it (forgot the camera back at the hotel  Bash). Dad and I went down and quartered it up and packed it to the truck. Not to eventful but it was great as always to share good times with my Grandfather and my dad. All said we took 350lbs into the butcher. I figure it was a 2.5yr old cow. It sure eats good!
