Never could connect with this one
« on: November 21, 2010, 07:14:41 PM »
I tried a new tactic and attempted to hold does in an area with feed. My idea was to keep them held until rut came. The night before late buck opened, this guy showed up. Boy did that change my hunting patterns. I have my normal areas that I hunt and skipped them trying to run this one down. He even showed up last night an hour and a half after dark. I tried still hunting, and moving around the area looking for him, he was always out of sight but somewhere close. This is the first year for tag soup that I can remember in many years. I feel like I sacrificed my late buck over this picture showing up on my trail cam I just could not get him out of my hunting thoughts. There was another buck that showed that was a 3x4 and one spike. There were several does also. I could see all of the deer off and on all day long everyday of late buck, but this big boy never did show. He struck me as a pretty good blacktail buck. I think that he got that size by being pretty smart. I wish Rasbo with his calls were there, maybe he could have coaxed him out of his hiding place. Now I just want to find his sheds. Maybe next year!

I would've spent my time waiting for him to show as well. Did you have a tree stand? Looks like thick reprod...tough to still hunt.

No tree stand, I just had a spot that worked well with a little tripod folding chair. Lots of little branches on the ground and make it hard to move quietly. Just had to move very slowly, but obviously not quiet enough. I did get to watch other deer come and go for hours though.

I checked my trail cam and he showed back up 1 day after late buck. Smart bugger! He still weighs on my mind. I am sure that some of you could have gotten him, so I just need to work on my skills I am sure.

Some of those bucks are so cagey and nocturnal they are next to impossible to get and most always die of old age, but good for you for trying.
Next year he might have a testerone overload and go into to the rut bad, that would be your only hope to catch him in the open and daylight.
