Tough going in 506
« on: November 28, 2010, 08:17:55 AM »
Well just got back late last night after being in the field since Thursday morning. Pulled out early so I can do some house chores and get back at it next week  :chuckle: Only spotted 2 elk in three full days of hunting in an area where I normally see 25-50 elk/day. Had to be the snow, the few sets of fresh tracks that I did cut you could see where they were moving the snow to get at their food, that and they were all headed down hill.

I've been hunting from 1800' to 2300' in elevation, I spent a half day down on the river bottom around 800' in an area that had tons of elk in spet and only a few tracks here and there. Been hunting the same 4 mile or so square area the last 3 years and there are always a bunch of cows/calves packed in there during the late season. Not so this year...back to square one!! It's OK I need to find a new area to hunt anyhow.

You guys finding elk in the normal spots with this wierd SW WA weather?

I had elk high and low.  It was a great late season for me.  I filled my tag in 506 yesterday.  I actually could have filled it on Friday but the calf I had at 35yards was just too small to make me release an arrow.  Sorry you didn't see much.  Sometimes there is no justice in hunting.
Aim small...miss small

No reason to be sorry and congrats on filling your tag. I will be back at it this coming week in another area about 15 miles away. Heard some reports from a couple guys I ran into that there were a few more elk in there. Not extremely familiar with the area they were talking about but I'll find my way around.

Ill shoot you a PM take it easy

i found elk easily in my normal areas, however, they were much lower on the hike and as we got higher in elevation signs virtually vanished. I think they were pushed down due to the early snow, i also found a set of bear tracks that were pretty fresh so he must've been caught off guard by the storm. But i definitely been finding elk in the same general areas just lower but i dont know if itll be the same since the snow will be gone by this coming weekend so they might move back up. I gave my partners all the shot opportunities this last weekend since i got a elk last year, and needless to say they all missed, so this coming weekend i call first dibs when we head back out. good luck!
