LATE SEASON M/L GMU 550
« on: April 10, 2008, 03:53:41 PM »
Anyone have an suggestion or experience with hunting GMU 550 for late season M/L.  I have never been to this GMU but  I'm looking at this GMU for a couple of reason.  I will not be back to the states until the state of rifle season so preseason scouting will be very limited.  Late season is set up for both deer and elk in 550 at the same time.

Anyone have any suggestions or better ideas.  Most of my  scouting this year will be on this website this year due to my deployment.  So any help you guys can give the better.

Thanks pete

I live and hunt in the coweeman, my dad has hunted it since the fifty's. My family has probably killed over a hundred head of elk in the coweeman (550) over the years.

I wrote out a big long post and when I read it, it came across very negative. So instead I'll ask a couple of questions. What is your expectation of the hunt? What exactly do you want to know?

My buddy hunted the coweeman last year for late muzzle.  i went with him for a few days, and we saw elk and were within shooting distance every day except the first.  it was our first time ever being in the unit and we were happy with the animals we saw for not knowing the area, just no legal bulls in the 4 days of hunting.  once a guy scouts a little bit im sure you could do well.  real elky ground.

Opp,
What I wanted to know was some pointers about the unit, maybe a general area to look.  I'm currently deployed floating in the western pacific ocean, so any scouting that I will be performing will be rushed to get the information prior to the season starting.  I guess my first expectation would being able to find the animals first then being able to take one home.  I'm not trophy hunting, just trying to put meat in the freezer.   This will also be my first time hunting with a M/L so there are, so I have a few mountains to overcome for it to be a successful year,  New gun, new unit, no scouting, just looking for a little help and guidance..

CJ,

thanks for the information.  Gives me a little confidence that I may be able to get into something..

There is elk in there. My dad had a toutle permit this last year for archery and while driving through the coweeman we saw 3 trucks with bulls in just a few days during muzzle. We had a few buddies hunt there and they saw a few but couldn't close the deal, good luck!
