Got bit today
« on: November 29, 2010, 01:31:11 PM »
Well it finally happened. The .223 is locked up until I can buy a new scope for it, so I decided to take the boys .243. I saw one dog on the hill about a million yards away, so I decide to try to call him in. He came about 100 yards and locked up. I sat for about 20 minutes tried some more calling and he just sat there staring at me. Knowing that I was busted, I decided to move to a different spot. He continued to sit in the same spot for a couple minutes before trotting off. As a last ditch effort to get this guy in, I tried calling one more time. He stopped but was still a good 500 or 600 yards out. Well, to my suprise, I look to my right and here comes another one on a dead sprint right down an old snowmobile trail. I lost him behind a hill for a moment but he popped out at about 250 yards. Broadside........BOOM. I'll be damned if the scope on that little .243 didn't kick back and lay my forehead right open. Not only did I get bit, but after a thourough check, I realized I missed the dog. That about wrapped up my day. I was done after that. Sorry Team Ursis.

I got a light bite from a 340 Weatherby once, big welt and only a little blood but it sure made me cautious afterward! I got mine shooting a rifle that was setup for a short guy with the scope pulled way back over the stock, sounds like you got a similar deal if the gun was setup for a kid.
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.

FC, my german made 340WBY is one of my favorite guns, and they do pack a serious whallop.  One of my good friends and hunting partners also favored the 340.  Years ago we were bear hunting together on Kodiak and he ended up getting scope bit.  He killed the bear he was shooting at, but there was more of his blood on the ground than the bears.  His eye looked nasty for over a week.

Not a good time. Sure makes a case for scopes with ample eye relief and making sure your cheek weld and position is second nature.

Every time I've picked up someone else's scoped rifle with more recoil than a 22 since then I have been extra careful with that first shot!

FC, your exactly right. His scope is set all the way back as far as it'll go. This is karma at it's finest for me. Years ago, I was at the range and this yuppie d-bag was there. He was shooting a Weatherby (sp) of some sort. He had the fancy deer deer silhouette targets (You know. The ones every serious deer hunter should have at the range.) and he was bragging about his hand loads. Oh he was all sorts of confident for a guy that had about a 6" group at 100 yards. Eventually.......WHACK!!! He caught the bridge of his nose with the scope. Well, if this guy hadn't been such an arrogant, pompuss a$$, I may have offered my condolences. All I could do was laugh. I have told the story 100 times and up until today have always gotten a good laugh out of it. I guess I should have just had my laugh and left it at that. I don't consider myself arrogant or to be a pompuss a$$, but I certainly learned my lesson on shooting guns that I'm not familiar with.

That happened to me 25 years ago with my 270 and old redfield scope.  I remember it has if it were yesterday.  I feel for you.

Got a picture someplace of when I was 16, with a bear I just killed, and a nice "bite" under my eye from the scope.  Not sure how it happened, but I was shooting downhill at the time.  I had blood dripping down my face when the picture was shot, so it looks like the bear attacked me  :chuckle:

Got bit by a 338 once as well, still have a noticeable crack in my nose from that one...  :bash:  Moral of the story, I pay way more attention now to my scope placement.

I've done it with a .300WSM.   It hurts.

Oh well, doesn't sound like you needed stitches, so that's good.

That sux man only got bit once by my buddies 416 thankfully he had a Swarovski on it so it didnt cut me but gave me a little idiot bump. My fiance was in spike camp alone while we were out chasing elk and a grizzly came in she shot to scare it off with my saddle gun "7mm lighthunter" and it bit her bad broke her nose and gave her a shiner. When we came running back to camp she was sitting there covered in blood i thought she got attacked.
Never to far, Just grab another minute!

I got bit the first time I ever fired a scoped rifle....course in my case the rifle was a 7mm magnum and I was only15 years old and maybe 125lbs soaking wet. :P My mother was pissed though when my buddy brought me home from shooting with a black eye and a cut over my eyebrow.
