First archery turkey
« on: December 05, 2010, 06:05:02 PM »
I finally got my first turkey with a bow on Thursday.  8) Turns out they are in massive flocks near Chewelah due to the heavy snow. She sure was fat when I dressed her out, gobs and gobs of it for the winter.

Good luck to everyone else out there.

Nice Bird, congrats.  Can you give a little story on how you got on it?  Break up the flock and call em back, Blind sitting, or spot n stalk ?

Ok, Bushmonster wanted to know the story. Chewelah has lots of cattle farms and the snow is hip deep so the going is tuff for the birds. We drove along the road, found a good group bunched up in the field. Got permission from the farmer, snuck in behind some snow burms and...........whacka!!!!

Well, not exactly. My buddy missed his first shot. I shot next and dropped this ol' girl. Buddy shot again and bounced it off one of the fence wires. The birds had enough after that and took off to the woods. We followed and got into two more groups. Buddy shot four more times and came up with....nothing. Fifty dollars in arrows and broadheads and no turkeys for him.  :P

My arrow landed a little low, but it came out through her craw and ruined absolutely 0% of the meat. Cool! Arrow even shredded her heart, though thats not saying much when all the vitals and everything are bunched up so close together.

Since then, took another buddy up and he missed twice with the shotgun. I think his is a bird fever/choke problem, but he said he's taking his gun in to the smithey.

I can't explain why it's so much fun to chase these birds around, but everyday I come home with a big smile on my face.  :)
