Scout rifle help
« on: December 14, 2010, 09:41:59 PM »
I am relatively new to this site and have a question and I hope with all of the knowledge here I can get some help.  I am in the market to buy a Scout rifle.  I have found a Savage Scout 10FCM as well as a Ruger Frontier both are about the same price and they are both .308.   I am not even looking at the Steyr since that is not in the budget.  I am just looking for anyone with practical experience with either one of these rifles, and why you would recommend one over the other.  Also any pluses you are aware of in either rifle  Any help will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

the ruger has controlled round feed. Unrelated: will shoot all day, even if you keep it hot.
the savage is push feed. Unrelated: will be a tack driver until it gets hot. Some people have had trouble with some of the bolt assembly parts.

If you buy the savage, PM me where to find the ruger :)

I bought a Ruger Frontier a few years ago, in .308. Added a Leupold 2 1/2 "Scout Style" scope. I love the set up. My concept is to practice, a lot, with it, and when you have to get a quick shot, it should, by then, be just throw the gun up and it will be near automatic to center crosshairs on target and shoot. You don't even need live ammo for a lot of that practice time. Just need the practice of getting that far relief scope on target, ASAP.

Shoot with a friend and at his range, there is a gong (was a gong) at 100 yards. It was probably like 8" dia., or so. We would stand there, off hand, and shoot at that gong, over and over. Amazing how fast a guy could get with that set up and hit that gong, off hand, repeatedly.

With that being said, after I bought the gun, I decided to go archery for Blacktail deer, and have not used the gun hunting, yet.

Ruger no longer makes the Frontier, but I am debating on getting another in .243 or 7mm-.08 for the wife.
