Cleaning rust from a barrel
« on: December 16, 2010, 07:54:53 PM »
Hello,

I have a TC Black Diamond with the standard blued barrel.  There is significant rust inside of the barrel, which seems to affect my accuracy based on a decline since the rust "incident" happened.  Obviously, this isn't ideal and could have been avoided, but it's where I'm at.

Any recommendations for getting the rust out?

Thanks.

Try some penetrating oil with a bronze brush, followed by some JB's bore paste.  Should clean it up.  Is the barrel pitted now?  You might also try firelapping it with the kit from David Tubbs.

Good luck.

I would recomend getting some Butch's Bore Shine and soak your bursh in the solvent, scurb your bore and run the JB Bore Paste in there.  Should work out well.  I'm sure its happened to most of us at one time or another.  Good luck!

remington bore cleaner, bore paste, fine valve lapping compound......something with a bit of grit. a brass jag with a patch and work it just enough to remove the rust, then continue with your regular cleaning program. chances are good that if accuracy took a dump, you are gonna have to lap on it for a bit to get it back...if ever.

Lapping your barrel is possible but it should be done by someone who knows what they're doing. Aggressive cleaning with the proper chemicals would be my first step. Also you can "iron" some of the scarring/pitting by shooting jacketed bullets at the range. I've successfully dealt with rust in centerfire rifles and depending on how bad it is and its location. It's not always an accuracy killer.

rust ia always an accuracy killer in centerfire rifles...just a matter of how much. being as you have a front stuffer.....get it out. you are not going to see enough difference to make a hoot.
