Interesting Cougar sighting this morning
« on: January 02, 2011, 03:03:59 PM »
Spent the weekend over at Rufus Woods and returned this morning. We were heading south on Hwy 17 right above Sun Lakes state park and saw what I though was a couple Coyotes in the road. Got a bit closer and realized it was two Cougars standing smack dab in the middle of the highway.

I hit the skids and we were probably less than 50 yds from them, before they decided the center line wasn't the safest place to be. The jumped off the road and headed up into the rocks on the side of the highway.

I found it odd that they didn't appear to be frightened at all,and were in no hurry to get off the road and out of sight.

They were fairly small (I'd guess 75-80lbs each) so I'm thinking they were either recently kicked to the curb by mom or mom had already crossed the road and we didn't see her.

Hmm... I'd have been pretty hard pressed not to hit the other pedal to save some deer this winter and spring.

OKAY.. I'm honest. I don't condone this sort of action but just sayin...

That thought crossed my mind, but it was just dark enough that I wasn't 100% positive what they were until we were right on them. We had seen over 50 deer on that stretch going over and it was far more likely they were deer than a cougar.

Hmm... Shooting on, from, or over an improved maintained road?  :chuckle:

I know.. You'd have stepped 15 feet off the road and shot away from the road at the kitties that just happened to stop, turn and look back at you.   ;)
