Idaho Moose Draw ??
« on: April 20, 2008, 10:49:53 PM »
Thought I would run this by the guys who seem to be into the moose hunting thing as I don't know much about them other than I want to hunt these big beasts. Idaho seems to have pretty good draw odds and I am somewhat familiar with the panhandle and have seen plenty of moose while hunting there so I would probably try for one of those tags. WHat I am unsure of is the best season dates as they are all split up know from Sept through Nov I believe. I do archery hunt for elk in Sept. so not real excited about doing a moose hunt then but since it is a OIL hunt is it better to hunt them during that time vs later. I want to get my $1700 worth of a hunt so what would you suggest for time frame or unit ideas if you want to throw that out there too. Thanks nwhunter

In my opinion the best two week season for calling is the Oct 1-14 season. The September 15-28 season can be good too, but that first week is a little early for good rut action.

You can also have decent success spotting and stalking in November, if you have a snowmobile and a pair of snowshoes. The key to the November seasons is finding where the moose winter. In some areas you can glass up moose until you find the bull you like, then snowshoe over to him and hope you can get a clear shot.

The panhandle is loaded with moose, pm me if you want any more info.

I went moose hunting last year in Idaho on Sept. 23rd.  Took me 5 days I think and I didn't see any rutting action until Sept. 28 when I shot my bull.  If I were to go I would go from about the 1st of October on.
