Moses Lake Chapter News

Two mid-summer work parties are planned
by the Moses Lake Chapter in conjunction with
the same goose banding project headed up by
Mikal Moore of the WDFW.
Goose Banding Project
This Friday, June 22, 2007 we will be
meeting at 2 p.m. until about 5 p.m. at the WDFW
office in Ephrata to construct the catch pens to be
used for gathering and banding geese the following
week. Mikal will be bringing all the materials.
On Wednesday, June 27, 2007 and possibly
into Thursday, June 28th, we will be trapping
and banding geese at two locations in Spokane
— the Gonzaga University (GU) Soccer Fields
and The Creek at Qualchan Golf Course. Because
we will be trapping at the golf
course, that means an early morning start
— 5 a.m. start at the golf course clubhouse,
located at 301 E. Meadowlane
Road. Those with internet can find the location
through mapquest.
In terms of gear, just plan on getting dirty.
Long sleeves are recommended because the
goslings have really sharp toenails that ill scratch
up your forearms. If you have your own pair of
pliers, an extra pair is always handy (needle nose
and/or regular). A comfortable pair of waders or
knee boots is nice, especially if we have to drive
the birds out of the water. Plus the waders will
keep the goose grease off your clothes. Also plan
to pack a lunch.
As always, plans are subject to change. It
is likely the goose banding will only take one day
instead of two, so plan on attending the 27th if at
all possible.
Those who can help at GU might want to
contact Mikal and maybe arrange to car pool to
save some fuel costs.
July Dove Banding
Also, we will be trapping and banding
doves near the end of July to help Mikal with that
project. Currently we are looking for suitable sites
to bait and trap doves, so if any WWA members
know places that hold good numbers of doves
please relay that info to Robin Hickok or myself.
