Reprod or clearcuts, thick or open west side yotes
« on: January 10, 2011, 08:33:32 PM »

First I would like to introduce myself. My name is Brian Melton I live in the satsop valley not far from Montesano. I generally am a archery hunter, but kick it up a notch for yotes. I have had limited success with yotes most have been killed in farmers fields, thats ok, but am much more interested in killing them in forest lands than fields. Guess I shouldn't complain, but I like to go when I want without worrying about permission on a given piece of land.

Now, that leads to my question.....is hunting the reprod more productive (in general) than hunting edges of clearcuts?? I have had zero luck in 2-3yr old cuts even against a much older reprod edge.

I know a guy that lives 4-5 miles from me that has killed 35 yes 35 yotes over bait in his back yard, and his land is surrounded by simpson....so I know the dogs have to be around. I prefer rodent distress, fawn distress, pup distress, rabbit distress.....myself distressed when nothing comes in. (in order of preference)

Thanks!! :hello:

I like hunting them in 20-30 year old second growth.

:yeah:

I have had a couple come out into clear cuts but for as many stands as I have made the odds are very low.  I decided to start going into the cover after them.  They travel the roads and hunt the clear cuts at night so I find an open are just inside the reprod.  Calling the thick cover I dont try to draw them in from very far I just make a stand ever 1/4 mile instead.  Have called quite a few but it is usually very quick shot opportunity and I havnt had much luck connecting.
