They work great.

Here is mine..
THE LIL SQUEALER

Brisket..

Pork butts

When I dont have the time to baby sit My big cooker I fire up the UDS..
The quality and flavor is good..
We use Chefs choice hard wood briquet. Some folks use kingsford..
Kingsford isnt My choice because of the lack of good smoke it produces..
Either way a few chunks of hardwood mixed in the load of fuel makes a big difference..
These cookers cost less than $100.00 to build including Beer..They work awesome..

Great thread dogtuk..
Whitey..

Any concerns with the finish/chems on the inside of the drum? What kind of drum are you using to make sure it's not dangerous?

You want a food grade drum..
Most of the food grade drums have liners applied to the inside of them which needs to be removed either by burning it out or sand blasting.
Most of Us just drill are intake holes at the bottom of the drum and build a very large fire in them until the liner is gone..Pallets can be used for the fuel source of this fire but should never be used for cooking. The pallets are most offten treated with fungasides and insectasides..But is suitable for burning the drums out.

Here is a great link also..

You can find the drums on Craigslist alot of times..for around $20.00
Weber replacement racks is what most of use..22 1/2"

They also make them out of wooden wine barrels.
Them are alot more work to keep looking decent but very cool for the patio.
Good luck with the build. If you have any questions give me a shout out..Be happy to help.
Whitey.
