Preping cage traps?
« on: October 23, 2010, 09:20:58 PM »
Hi All,

I have a question about cage traps.   I used to trap with legholds & conibers before the ban, but have no experience with cage traps.   I cleaned and dyed and waxed my traps before putting them out.  I did not do all this at first, other than a wash down.  After reading up on trapping (I was learning as you go, so to speak), I began to do this and my catches increased considerably.

What type of prep is needed on cage traps before setting them out?   Aside from a washdown to get any oils or whatever off them, is there anything that you guys do special to treat them?

Have been thinking about picking up a couple of cages and setting them out this year.   Just wondering if there is anything I might need to know to speed up the learning process a bit.

Thanks.

For the last couple of years I stacked them up and painted them with speed-dip, but they stayed sticky for a long time. This year I painted some new ones with brown and dark green spray paint-Krylon, I think. My main objectives are to protect from rust and disguise them from people discovering them.
I don't know if animals are spooked by bright, shiny, new cages. I have caught plenty of beavers in bare-metal  have-a-harts. What do you guys think?
